Job Summary:
The purpose of this position is to provide hydrologic support to the Department for all aspects of data collection by conducting fieldwork as directed by objectives of the Hydrology Division and Field Services Section.
Additionally, this position assist with the repair and installation of automated well sites and therefore be able to lift supplies/equipment up to 60 lbs. Contacts owners for permission to measure, travels to well sites to make measurements using electrical sounders, steel tape, etc. and maintains contact and well site information in Master Section files.
Job Duties:
This position requires fieldwork and is responsible for data collection. Specifically, position assignments will include manual water level measurements statewide, stream flow measurements, GPS surveys and gravity and well discharge measurements.
Assists with all aspects of the Automated Groundwater Monitoring program including the preparation and installation of automated groundwater monitoring equipment at well sites, site operation and maintenance, site troubleshooting and repairs, and the downloading of data from automated devices at wells sites and the uploading of data into GWSI Oracle.
Maintains and inputs data into ADWR databases. Prepares hydrologic reports and field summaries for management and general public. Must be able to four-wheel drive off road to many well sites, work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, walk with water level measurement equipment sometimes over a half a mile to well site and lift equipment up to 10-20 lbs. with flexibility to maneuver around well site.
A hybrid work schedule (some work in the office and some work from home) is available for this position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of:
- Groundwater and techniques for measuring, sampling or investigating groundwater
- Knowledge of the behavior and occurrence of water in nature
- How monitoring and sampling programs work
- Information sources, research methods, and techniques utilized in water resources management
- Computer applications and equipment, including Excel, Word, Access, Oracle and GPS
- Current concepts and practices in water resource management
- System of land/property description and identification used in the State of Arizona
Skills and interest in:
- The use of field equipment and techniques and performing field testing/measurement activities
- Coordinating and conducting field investigations and maintaining an effective working relationship with team members, agency employees and with the public
- Preparing reports/ involving water resources, drawing maps or sketches based on survey data, aerial photographs, and field observations/measurements
- Using spreadsheets and databases to organize, analyze and interpret water resource management data
- Applying a multi-disciplinary approach to resolve complex, sensitive, and/or visible water resource management issues
Ability to:
- Use computers and analytical methods to retrieve, organize, and present data
- Use and be acquainted with common tools and field services instruments. (sounder, steel tape, hand tools, various discharge measurement devices, transducers, GPS, topographic maps, computers and 4×4 trucks)
- Drive off-road 4×4 to well sites, lift equipment 10-20 lbs. with flexibility to maneuver around well site.
- Mix concrete, pour well pad, install sounding tube, well shelter, mast and other automated equipment
- Apply concepts and instruction provided within the context of the data collection duties assigned
- Interpret/explain and ensure compliance with state and Federal water management statutes and Department policies and procedures
- Be polite and courteous, as this position will often deal with the public.
- Interpret geologic, hydrologic and topographic maps and reports
- Be comfortable with working outdoors and traveling statewide and be able to adapt to changing conditions.

This position requires fieldwork. Candidate must be comfortable with working outdoors and traveling statewide and be able to adapt to changing conditions. Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
Candidates should have Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in geology, hydrology, or a related field.

Retirement:
Positions in this classification participate in the Arizona State Retirement system (ASRS). Please note, enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment. The current contribution rate is 12.17%
