Job description

These are two new and exciting opportunities to shape the way we collect data on our rivers, lakes and streams within the (Natural Capital Ecosystems Assessment; NCEA) project. The NCEA a flagship multi-agency science programme with a high profile with policy makers in Defra and Environment Agency. Within the NCEA programme the Environment Agency focus is to deliver the benefits and outcomes for the water environment.

Working with the G6 network designer, you will provide technical advice on the full range of ecological, physicochemical and hydro morphological monitoring in lakes, rivers and small streams. You will have a good technical knowledge of freshwater monitoring gained from a number of years of experience in the field and/or in the use of data, and an interest and passion to learn more and advance our approach as an organisation.
You will deliver work both yourself and through projects with partners and contractors with the aim of making sure our NCEA new monitoring networks fulfil their potential to give us a unique view on the condition and change in condition of our small streams, lakes and rivers. Some experience of project management would be an advantage.

Specifically, you will

• Progress work, including managing funded projects, on refining and developing our lakes, small stream and river monitoring.
• Build networks with experts both internally and externally to help answer difficult technical challenges and find solutions.
• Be involved in technical decision making around innovative new monitoring techniques such as eDNA.
• Work with colleagues to help plan the delivery of the small stream network, lakes network and the river surveillance network.

Experience/skills required

These are great opportunities for anyone with a strong technical knowledge of freshwater monitoring and a desire to learn more and shape these new innovative national monitoring programmes. You will have the opportunity to build your networks with colleagues and partners across EA and Defra family.

Background and knowledge:

• Degree or higher qualification in environmental discipline
• Strong experience of collecting and analysing environmental data in the freshwater environment.
• Up to speed on existing and emerging practice in water data science.

You will:

• be able to work on your own initiative,
• be able to communicate technical issues clearly and be able to adapt to a range of audiences,
• work in ‘virtual teams’ to deliver outcomes with people across and beyond the organisation

These roles are permanent posts within the Strategic Evidence Design and Assessment Team in the Chief Scientist’s Group. The base location for this post can be at any of our offices across England (subject to confirmation of space) to fit with a reasonable commute. Occasional travel for meetings may be required. There is good opportunity for blended home and office working. You will make the best use of our IT tools to collaborate effectively across the business and with partners and customers.
