Project – “AquaINFRA”

And any other projects undertaken by the Department of Geosciences

Applications are invited for a Research Support Officer to carry out duties in relation to the AquaINFRA project funded by Horizon Europe and in which the University of Malta is a collaborator. The Research Support Officer may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Geosciences.

Applicants should be in possession of a PhD in the area of hydrogeology or geology, and be experienced in groundwater modelling. Skills in parallelised finite element modelling will be considered an asset.  The applicants should have experience in communicating science via publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presentations at international conferences. They should be self-motivated and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The applicants must be able to organise and prioritise tasks within the project timeline so as to meet interim deadlines. They must also possess good written communication and academic writing skills.

The full-time post is for a period of 24 months. 

Candidates who already hold a Research Support Officer post at the University of Malta will start at their current salary rate in accordance with the salary structure for Research Support Officers.  The remuneration per annum for the post starts at €31,200 up to €33,280.

Further information may be obtained by contacting Prof. Aaron Micallef at aaron.micallef@um.edu.mt.  The Research Support Officer may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Geosciences.

The appointee will be expected to undertake the following tasks:

  • Retrieve and provide baseline geological, hydrological, hydrogeological and remote sensing data from onshore and the coastal waters of the Maltese Islands to project partners;
  • Test the developed AquaINFRA services in inland and coastal water environments in the Maltese Islands;
  • Assess the impact of surface and groundwater water processes on marine water quality and quantity, and ecosystem services;
  • Management of project activities (including co-ordination of day-to-day activities, and compilation of progress reports);
  • Produce deliverables within the stipulated time frames as specified in the project description;
  • Keep detailed progress reports and abide to all the conditions imposed by the project;
  • Participate in the project communication activities (e.g. scientific manuscript writing, conference presentation, public outreach activities);
  • Travel and attend meetings/conferences as the need arises; and
  • Perform any other tasks as instructed by the principal investigator at the University of Malta and key experts.

The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

The selection procedure will involve:

  1. scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
  2. shortlisting; and
  3. an interview and / or extended interview.

The post is for a period of 24 months, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
