OPEN CALL FOR RESEARCH GRANT APPLICATION WITHIN THE TERMS LAID DOWN OF THE REGULATIONS FOR RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ALGARVE

TITLE:  1 Doutotal Research Grant

It is now open a call for 1 (one) Doctoral Research Grant within the project Sustainable Horizons”, reference 101071300, funding by F6 – HEUROPE, with the following conditions:

Admission Requirements: 1) Master in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or related areas; 2) Research experience in water management focus on treatment; 3) Motivation letter, taking into consideration the of University Of Algarve’s Research Grants Regulation (https://files.dre.pt/2s/2021/10/210000000/0013700149.pdf) and the Regulation for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology (https://www.fct.pt/apoios /bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2019DR.pdf).

The doctoral research grant within the scope of the “Sustainable Horizons” project is intended to finance research activities leading to obtaining the academic degree of Doctor at the University of Algarve, with mandatory enrollment in the Doctoral course at the University of Algarve.

Work Plan: The work to be developed falls within the scope of sustainable water management, with the following tasks:

(i) Identification and understanding the challangers of water management (urban cycle) for improving sustainability;

(ii) Design and develop sustainable solutions to promote water efficeincy;

(iii) Implement/test some of the developed solutions;

(iv) Dissemination and scientific communication.

Applicable legislation and regulations: Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law nº 40/2004, of August 18, in the current wording conferred by Decree-Law nº 123/2019, of August 28 and the Regulation of Research Grants of the University of Algarve (https://files.dre.pt/2s/2021/10/210000000/0013700149.pdf) and the Regulation for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology (https://www.fct.pt/apoios /bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2019DR.pdf).

Working place: The work will be developed at University of Algarve, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, supervised Margarida Ribau Teixeira (UAlg), Luís Miguel Nunes (UAlg) and a professor from a partner institution of the project.

Duration of the grant: The grant will have a first contract of 12 months duration, beginning on April, 2023. The contract may be renewed until the end of the project, for a maximum of 36 months, considering Foundation for Science and Technology Research Grants Regulation (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2019DR.pdf).

Value of monthly maintenance allowance: The monthly maintenance allowance corresponds to 1,144.64 euros. The maintenance allowance will be paid monthly by bank transfer. (https://files.dre.pt/2s/2022/03/057000000/0023900239.pdf )

Selection criteria will be as follows: The assessment considers the candidate’s merit and motivation. Applications considered admissible will be scored on a scale of 0 to 100 points in each of the following evaluation criteria:

• Criterion A – Academic and professional background and grades obtained.

o Sub-criterion A1 [0 – 100] – Academic and professional path (if applicable), with a weight of 20%.

o Sub-criterion A2 [0 – 100] – Classifications obtained in the academic course, with a weight of 20%.

• Criterion B [0 – 100] – Facultative interview (in person or via Zoom), with a weight of 30%; in case the jury decides not to interview the candidates, criterion A2 will have a weight of 40% and criterion C will weigh 30%.

• Criterion C [0 – 100] – Research activity in the research field of the work plan, publications, and complementary training, with a weight of 20%.

• Criterion D [0 – 100] – Letter of motivation and letters of recommendation/institutional support, with a weight of 10%.

For the purpose of deciding on granting scholarships, candidates will be ordered according to the weighted average of the classification obtained in each of the four criteria, translated by the following formula:

Final classification= 0.2 ×A1+0.2 ×A2+0.3×B+0.2×C+0.1×D,  if the jury decides to interview the candidates0.2 ×A1+0.4×A2+0.3×C+0.1×D,  if the jury decides not to interview the candidates

The Jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship to candidates with a final score of less than sixty (60) points.

The tender jury shall comprise the following members:

– Maria Margarida da Cruz Godinho Ribau Teixeira (President);

– Maria Alexandra Teodósio (Effetive member)

– Luís Miguel de Amorim Ferreira Fernandes Nunes (Effetive member)

– José Manuel Quintela de Brito Jacob (Substitute member)

Publication and notification of the results: Results will be publicized through an ordered list according to the final grade and posted in Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia and communicated to the applicants by e-mail to the addresses indicated by each candidate.

Deadline for applications and submission forms: the call is open from 22rd March 2023 to 12th April 2023.

Applications must be accompanied by the following documents:

– Official identification document (simple copy or legal equivalent). If you have a nationality other than Portuguese, you should present a residence permit, permanent residence certificate or long-term resident status, valid on the scholarship start date, any of which may be replaced, in its absence, by a declaration of commitment. However, one of the previous must be delivered at the contracting phase, under penalty of forfeiture of the granting of the scholarship;

– Copy of the qualification certificates of the academic degrees held, specifying the final classification and, if possible, the classifications obtained in all subjects taken;

If the doctorate has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must conform to the rules established in Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of August 16, and all required formalities must be complied with up to the date of termination deadline for submission of the application. If the completed process is not found until the end of the application deadline, the candidate must prove that he/she has requested the recognition of the degree.

– Curriculum Vitae;

– Passport or identification card for European applicants (copy);

– Taxpayer Identification Number (NIF), if you have a nationality other than Portuguese, it must be submitted during the scholarship contracting phase, under penalty of forfeiture of the scholarship award;

– PDF of the publications, if any;

– A declaration that intends to enrol in a Doctorate course at the University of the Algarve;

– Other documents considered important

– Supporting documents stating that the applicant gathers all the requirements for this grant, namely the enrolment certificate in the Doctorate course at the Universidade do Algarve;

– Supervisor Declaration taking the responsibility for the Work plan supervision, according to article 5º-A of the Statute of Scientific Research Fellow, as well as assuring the necessary conditions for the development of the work plan and in compliance with article 13 º of the Statute of Scientific Research Fellow;

– Declaration of the Grant acceptance;

– Declaration of commitment stating the exclusivity regime.

Complaints and Appeal Deadlines and procedures

On the decision for granting the Research Grant, candidates may, if they wish, comment on the hearing of interested parties, within 10 working days, under the terms provided for in the Administrative Procedure Code.

From the practice or omission of any act of the evaluation panel, candidates can complain to the body, within 10 working days.

The final decision of the evaluation panel can be appealed to the Rector within 15 working days after the respective notification.

Scholarship contract
With the applicant(s) selected, and after receiving all the required documentation, a scholarship contract will be signed in accordance with the attached model.
Assessment of the scholarship holder(s)
At the end of each period of duration of the scholarship contract, the activity developed by the scholarship holder(s) is evaluated by the supervisor, by applying the following criteria, in accordance with the attached model:

a) Achievement of objectives – this component aims to assess the level of achievement of results by the grantee,

taking into account the plan of activities to be developed (50%);

b) Behavioral competencies – this component aims to evaluate the personal characteristics shown during the evaluation period (25%);

c) Personal attitude – this component aims to evaluate the personal commitment and availability shown during the

evaluation period, taking into account factors such as effort, interest, and motivation demonstrated (25%).

The University of the Algarve reserves the right to cancel this application procedure if by any means the contract celebration with the funding entity is not established.
