The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) is a statutory authority established to facilitate the effective management of Victoria’s fisheries resources in a coordinated and strategic way that ensures their ongoing sustainability. The VFA functions to ensure that the Government, the recreational and commercial fishing sectors, and the Victorian community can share in and obtain the benefits from sustainable fisheries management. The VFA has around 188 FTE located in the Melbourne CBD, metropolitan Melbourne and across regional Victoria Victoria has been involved in aquaculture for over twenty years and manages this work under the Fisheries Act (Victoria) 1995, which provides for the management, development and promotion of an ecologically sustainable and viable aquaculture industry.

AQUACULTURE OFFICER

About the Role

The position Aquaculture Officer provides support to the Manager Aquaculture regarding all aspects of Aquaculture Management within the Victorian Fisheries Authority including regulatory, policy, legislative and strategic advice, licensing, and Ministerial correspondence related to the management of aquaculture production.

On a personal level the candidate will be successful in working constructively with multiple project partners (inter-state, interagency and inter-disciplinary), stakeholder groups, VFA management, policy, compliance and research staff on the range of policy and management issues to support the division and assist in the day-to-day management of the freshwater fishery.

Position Outcomes

Pivotal to success in the role is the ability to collaborate and be adaptable and flexible within a fast-paced working environment. The successor will also need to be capable within the following:

  • Provide administration requirements for VFA as Committee of Management of Aquaculture Fisheries Reserves
  • Provide administration requirements for leasing of sites within Aquaculture Fisheries Reserves.
  • Provide assistance with management of the Victorian shellfish quality assurance program including monitoring, recording and interpreting test results in shellfish harvesting areas.
  • Provide assistance with preparation of annual and triennial reports for shellfish harvesting areas for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries auditing.
  • Provide assistance with management and maintenance of navigational aids for Aquaculture Fisheries Reserves.
  • Provide expertise and advice to the Manager Aquaculture on the management and sustainable development of Victoria’s aquaculture industry, including the identification and analysis of and response to new and emerging issues in the field.
  • Provide assistance with administration of the Translocation Evaluation Panel.

Qualifications and Experience

Desirable

  • The following would be an advantage: a relevant tertiary degree and/or equivalent experience in a related field would be advantageous.

  • This position will have a requirement for out of hours work which may involve evening or weekend work including occasional overnight travel.
