Position SummaryThe Climate and Severe Weather research group at Central Michigan University is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to conduct research on a project exploring current and future risk of hail and convective windstorms under human-induced climate change. This project will use extreme value analysis and statistical analysis under non-stationary frameworks. The project is supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and will involve regular discussions to ensure the analysis is implementable for standards. Accordingly, experience with climate datasets, statistical analysis, high-performance computing is required, as is basic knowledge of severe convective storms and the environmental conditions that support their formation. Experience with risk analysis or engineering applications would be strong attributes for an applicant.The appointee is expected to carry out their research responsibilities with limited guidance. Mentoring of the appointee will be conducted according to NSF guidelines.Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.The expected starting date for the appointment is in January 2023. The appointment is for 12 months (renewable based on satisfactory performance and funding availability).
Required QualificationsPh.D. in Atmospheric Science or in a closely related field completed within the past 6 yearsExperience with climate datasets, statistical analysis, high-performance computingBasic knowledge of severe convective storms and the environmental conditions that support their formationAbility to perform the essential functions of the job with or withour reasonable accommodations
Preferred QualificationsExcellent writing and communication skills.Familiarity with risk analysis and engineering applications.Previous experience in the writing of scientific publications.

About the DepartmentThe Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, housed in the College of Science and Engineering, offers B.S. degrees in Meteorology, Geology, Environmental Science, and participates in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Earth and Ecosystems Science.
