Job summary

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is a world-leading agency providing the most comprehensive range of marine geospatial information across the globe. This information is used by for the primary purpose of safe navigation and global trade efficiency, but also supports other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

The Hydrographic Programmes team are continuing to expand and require an additional Hydrographic Programmes Officer to support data collection and other collaboration programmes to ensure the successful delivery of the UKHOs corporate plan. The Hydrographic Programmes are part of the wider Data Acquisition Division, and work closely with many other teams across the UKHO to ensure the successful delivery of activity on a worldwide basis.

The post provides support to the Head of Hydrographic Programmes (HHP), and to the Hydrographic Programmes/Project Managers (HPM), in the delivery of this portfolio.

Job description

This post is responsible for maintaining the Hydrographic Programmes (HP) Team Geographical (Geospatial) Information System (GIS), conducting research, coordinating input from wider UKHO stakeholders and collating draft technical visit reports and briefing notes in fulfilment of discrete projects. The post holder will assist the HP Team in the operational delivery and management of programmes and projects and making representations on their behalf at various fora, both national and international, as required, as well as helping to plan and deliver meetings effectively.

Responsibilities

These will include: 

  • Maintain the Hydrographic Programmes GIS database:
  • Support HPM’s in Programme management and governance duties, including helping to run and deliver effective meetings and stakeholder engagement.
  • Produce outline draft reports ahead of technical assessment activities.
  • Provide support to the Hydrographic Programmes team in the development of policy papers and funding bids.
  • Business case development for new projects and complex multi-stranded international programmes.
  • Deputise and act as point of contact whilst travelling staff are overseas.

Essential Technical/Functional Skills and Experience

  • High level of literacy and proven technical report writing skills.
  • To be an established geospatial analyst with proven experience of managing and application of a GIS, preferably in a marine context.
  • Recognised GIS training and/or equivalent experience
  • Displays tact, diplomacy, sound judgement and professional self-confidence borne out of experience.
  • An interest and sound understanding of international affairs and geopolitical sensitivity.
  • Confident in delivering briefings to stakeholders and facilitating engagement.
  • Ability to work off site and on occasion to undertake international travel.
  • Knowledge of navigational products and their practical application.

You will also be asked to give a verbal brief during your interview.  Information relating to this will be provided to you 1 hour before your interview but it will involve the importance of hydrography.

  • Interview will be with a panel of no more than 3 people and will involve a presentation as outlined above.
