Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Dean of the University Library, the Water Resources Collections Archivist will organize complex, specialize water resources archives, and prepare finding aids. Provide research assistance to campus and community researchers. Work closely with leaders in the water management community and would maintain positive working relationships. From time to time, Provide presentations related to water resources. Provide lead the work of a small group of student assistants and a staff person.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform complex paraprofessional and/or specialized library functions to support library operations. Responsible for overseeing daily operations of (a) large or significant library unit(s), including directly or indirectly providing lead work direction to other library and clerical staff, as well as student workers in all WRI collections (CSUSB and Palm Desert Campus). May be involved in supporting the unit’s budgetary and/or other administrative functions.

Organize complex, specialize water resources archives, and prepare finding aids.

Provide research assistance to campus and community researchers.

Provide presentations related to water resources.

Attend meetings of the water management community. Maintain positive working relationships with leaders in the water management community.

Other duties as assigned by the Dean, University Library.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and three to four years of increasingly responsible library experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of library operations in assigned library unit(s) or department and its relation to overall library operations.
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of assigned unit’s or department’s principles, policies, practices and procedures and their relationship to overall library functions and other units, and the ability to apply this expertise and judgment to address unique problems.
  • Thorough knowledge of library collection itself, its organization, and classification schemes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of external on-line databases, systems and resources and trends pertaining to assigned functional area, including expertise in searching strategies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of institution’s and library’s policies and practices associated with ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources, as well as general knowledge of library bill of rights and code of ethics.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of national standards and resources pertaining to library operations, including the ability to source and interpret information from such resources.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of national and institutional standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure full compliance with legal requirements.
  • Expertise in most aspects of the library’s automated and on-line catalog systems, including database maintenance functions.
  • Ability to participate in long range planning through the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data and information.
  • In-depth and comprehensive knowledge of library accounting and budget policies and procedures, including the ability to collect, organize and analyze data to support planning and budgeting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of lead work direction and campus human resource and payroll policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate of Completion from an archival training program (i.e., Western Archives Institute or Georgia Archives Institute) or equivalent or three years of increasing responsibility in an archives or special collections unit.
  • Demonstrated experience with Archives Space.
  • Knowledge of southern California water history.
  • Working knowledge of descriptive and metadata standards such as Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Dublin Core.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, systems, workflows, and best practices associated with digital collection building and content curation especially within an archives and special collections environment.
  • Knowledge of the various water agencies who deliver, protect, and maintain Southern California’s water infrastructure.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,998.00 – $6,893.00

Classification Salary Range: $ 3,998.00 – $7,376.00

Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary

Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver’s license and reflects driving record.

Physical Exam

Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
