THE ROLE

We are seeking talented and enthusiastic researchers who have a strong research interest and growing reputation in hydrology and water resources with demonstrated interest in applications of data science and modelling. The successful candidate will support the research of Professor Lucy Marshall, Executive Dean, Faculty of Science and Engineering and will collaborate with members of her research group, located at Macquarie University and at two other Australian universities.

The successful candidate will be expected to make a vigorous contribution in one or more of the following research areas and contribute to the supervision of PhD and MRes research students:

  • developing and testing new approaches to water resources modelling,
  • application of Bayesian inference methods to environmental problems,
  • machine learning and data science applications,
  • undertaking analysis and modelling with remote sensing data,
  • novel approaches to uncertainty quantification, especially as applied to environmental problems.

About You

You will have completed a PhD in a related discipline area. You will bring your strong research expertise to a multi-disciplinary team and help the team to develop and evaluate real-world systems for consumers. We are looking both for academic rigour and outputs, as well as proven problem-solving experience, and ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders. You will be an excellent communicator, passionate about your research, and enjoy working in a dynamic team.

Essential criteria

  • PhD in statistical modelling or a closely related area in statistics, data science, engineering or mathematics
  • Demonstrated research ability that supports the Executive Dean’s research interests
  • A strong record of research achievements as evidenced by high quality publications
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate students
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Experience of presenting research results at scientific meetings
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong computing skills including in programming in R

Desirable criteria

  • Potential to generate collaboration and funding from industry.

Salary Package: Level B from $110,274 to $130,472 p.a., plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading.

Appointment Type: Full-time, fixed term for 3 years.
