You will be contracted to the NRW location stated in this advert, of which you will be required to attend for regular meetings, training and for one-to-one meetings with your manager. These will be planned in advance.

Job description

This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in flood risk management. The purpose of this role is to support the development and maintenance of Natural Resources Wales’ flood forecasting service. This is a business critical role, delivering technical support work, including analysing data, assisting development of both fluvial and tidal flood forecasting models, assisting in development of software systems and delivering the operational flood forecasting service as part of a duty standby roster. As well as this the role is responsible for routine maintenance of the Wales Incident and Forecasting Room in Ty Cambria, ensuring all our systems and communications equipment is in full working order, prepared for operational use on a 24/7 basis.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities include:

  • Support the rest of the team with technical project work;
  • Report progress on your work to the Team Leader, identifying and actively reporting issues and risks, including resolving those within your immediate control;
  • Plan and publish flood incident duty officer rotas and organise additional cover arrangements for added resilience during peak holiday periods (for example Christmas, New Year and Easter);
  • Retrieve and analyse river and coastal data (forecast and observed), to assist in model build, calibration and post-event analysis, from our own and others digital archives. Support the quality assurance and analysis of data for trends and statistics, ensuring any information you create is archived appropriately for others to use in the future;
  • Assist in post-flood event analysis, using observed and forecast, river and coastal data to assess the performance of forecasting models and services.
  • Ensure NRW policies and processes are adhered to;
  • Maintain records and information in line with regulations and agreed standards.
  • Ensure continuous improvement in effectiveness and efficiency by seeking and utilising opportunities to further your expertise.
  • Contribute to the delivery of a flood forecasting service by undertaking the role of the monitoring and forecasting duty officer. This is a rota’d duty officer role, on standby duty, 24/7, approximately one week in every six; as well as this, to be available as far as is reasonable, to assist in operational response during prolonged flood events when not on standby.
  • Required to take part in incident response activities.

Qualifications, experience and knowledge

Knowledge and experience of the following: 

  1. Membership of a relevant professional institution is desirable.
  2. Work experience of flood risk management, flood forecasting, hydrology, hydrometry, river / coastal modelling or technical support is desirable.
  3. Attention to detail, well organised and methodical approach to work.
  4. An ability to deliver routine and non-routine tasks to different deadlines.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to deal confidently with a range of internal customers.

Welsh Language Requirements:  

Essential Level 1 â€“ able to pronounce Welsh and use basic phrases
