Job Description

Position Summary

Under general supervision, performs technical research and analysis related to watershed health including water quality assessments and land use and geographic information systems (GIS) assessments to identify and address source water risks.  Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to understand, explore, and communicate opportunities and obstacles to protect Denver Water’s raw water supply.  Denver Water offers employees the benefit of a flexible work program, which includes a hybrid work model requiring a minimum of two days in the office.  

  • Optional flex scheduling and hybrid of 2 days a week in the office and 3 working remotely is currently available. If using the hybrid option, the successful candidate should have a dedicated/focused workspace with a reliable internet connection and immediate availability during core business hours via online portals such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom to support the division when needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities over other employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support project management of Denver Water’s Holistic Watershed Plan, which is in-development. This position will also support development and implementation of projects identified within the Watershed Plan.
  • Responsible for the coordination of presentations and dissemination of technical data, including water quality and project-related data, in internal and external cooperative information exchanges.
  • Maintain raw water quality data sets and review for quality control. This includes monthly data report updates.
  • Use and interpret aerial photographs, GIS map layers with support of GIS staff, charts, diagrams, and raw numeric data to assess baseline conditions and long-term trends.
  • Conduct special studies on water quality, hydrology and post-fire water quality assessments, as well as Watershed Plan project effectiveness assessments.
  • Analyze and make recommendations on proposed internal and external watershed projects.
  • Interact with scientists, engineers, attorneys, and regulators in the surface water standards and regulations rulemaking hearing process to protect Denver Water’s assets and interests.
  • Communicate technical information in writing and verbally to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Aquatic Biology, Watershed Science or a related field.
  • Minimum 4 years of related work experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of certifications, education, or experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities for the position.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

  • Water Resources Senior Scientist – Water Rights: Certification as a Professional Hydrologist or Professional Geologist preferred Minimum 4 years of related work experience.
  • Environmental and Watershed Planning Section-Must possess and maintain a valid Class ‘R’ Colorado driver’license and have a satisfactory driving record.
