The Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Remediation and Waste Management, is seeking to fill an Environmental Hydrogeology Specialist vacancy in Augusta.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position provides professional hydrogeologic services relating to the investigation, remediation, and monitoring at landfill sites in Maine. In addition, this position provides hydrogeological expertise to all Bureau programs by planning and determining the appropriate hydrogeologic investigation and remedial solution for contaminated sites. The position also collaborates with staff throughout the Department to achieve clean-up goals and provide assistance as needed. Duties include review, oversight, participation in, and supervision of soil and hydrogeologic investigations and review of work plans and reports. The successful candidate is expected to be skilled in the use of a variety of sampling, geophysical, and testing tools and in the collection of soil, hydrological, and geological data during field investigations. Strong verbal and writing skills are required for the presentation of conclusions to technical and non-technical audiences including Department staff, consultants, responsible parties, and the general public. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have an 8-year combination of education and experience in the fields of hydrogeology, hydrology, and geology, including experience in responsible charge of geological work.

Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements: Candidates must be licensed as a Geologist by the Maine Board of Licensure for Geologists and Soil Scientists prior to attaining permanent status in this class.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of organic and inorganic geochemistry relating to landfill leachate fate and transport.
  • Knowledge of investigation and remediation methodologies at contaminated sites.
  • Familiarity with GIS, statistical, geochemical, and data plotting software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain a large workload and meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to analyze problems, reach logical conclusions, and make sound, cost-effective recommendations.
