JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A Postdoctoral Research Position is available starting March 1, 2023, in the Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University. Our team is looking for a motivated postdoctoral scholar who is interested in studying human-Earth system interactions and their impacts on water scarcity. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be working broadly with a large multi-disciplinary team of people, understanding and quantifying how hydroclimatic processes, human systems, and other stressors shape critical water scarcity outcomes across sectors. Successful applicants will have experience working with hydrologic or water resources models, analysis of large datasets, coding, and high-performance computing. The candidate will be joining a growing team with close interdisciplinary collaborations (hydrologists, climate modelers, systems engineers, data and software engineers), working with university partners and national labs. The successful scholar will have several opportunities for professional development, such as mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, interdisciplinary collaboration, and project management. Support will be provided for travel to present work at conferences and to work with our collaborators, as needed.

Main responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement new research objectives and ideas.
  • Process and analyze large datasets.
  • Develop and run large computational experiments.
  • Provide mentorship to junior scientists within the lab group.
  • Present research at national/international conferences and workshops.
  • Produce high-quality scientific manuscripts suitable for publication in top-tier journals.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering/Environmental Science/Systems Engineering/Hydrology or a related field within the past five years (60 months) and no later than 6/30/2023 from an accredited college or university
  • Demonstrated experience with coding in Python or other languages
  • A proven publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals
