Postdoctoral Research Position in River Hydrology and Geomorphology

Penn State University

State College, PA, USA 🇺🇸

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A Postdoctoral Research position is available starting August 1, 2023, in the Department of Geosciences in Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Our team is seeking a motivated postdoctoral scholar interested in fluvial hydrology, geomorphology, and remote sensing techniques to quantify water and sediment fluxes. The postdoctoral researcher will be working on two funded NASA projects aimed at utilizing the newly launched Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite to quantify river discharge in ungauged river reaches. Research will also involve field work to collect measurements of river discharge coincident with SWOT overpasses, as well as measurements of sediment concentrations and turbidity to develop relationships for sediment fluxes using optical satellite imagery. Finally, the postdoctoral researcher will also help to utilize and refine a data repository through the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science (CUAHSI) to collect community data on river discharge that can be used to improve SWOT-based discharge estimates. Successful applicants will have experience in hydrology and/or geomorphology, remote sensing, and field data collection. The successful candidate will join the Coastal Geomorphology group at Penn State and will collaborate with researchers at Idaho State University, Ohio State, UMass, USGS, and NOAA. The researcher will have several opportunities for professional development, such as mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, interdisciplinary collaboration, and conference attendance. People from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Fieldwork planning and data collection of river discharge and suspended sediment transport
  • Remote sensing analyses of river discharge and suspended sediment
  • Working collaboratively to improve a community data repository for river discharge
  • Producing high-quality scientific manuscripts for publication
  • Presenting research results in scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Providing mentorship to junior scientists within the research group

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in an appropriate field and be able to provide evidence that all requirements have been met for completion of the Ph.D. prior to the effective date of hire
  • Good track record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated by published journal articles
  • Strong time-management skills with the ability to work on multiple projects
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more programming languages
  • Demonstrated experience with one or more types of remote sensing data
  • Demonstrated experience collecting field data

To apply:

Application review will begin immediately, and the position will remain open until it is filled. Applications must be submitted electronically and include the following:

  • Names and contact information of three references
  • Cover letter (2 pages max, 12-pt font) that outlines (1) your research interests, (2) previous research experience, and (3) how your experience aligns with the position summary and requirements
