The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Bureau of Waterways is recruiting to fill a Waterway and Wetland Field Supervisor. This position could be stationed out of Black River Falls, Wisconsin Rapids, Janesville, Madison, or other available space in Southwest Wisconsin Facilities.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for the management of the Waterway and Wetland regulatory programs including: waterways, dams, wetland permitting, shoreland zoning, compliance and enforcement, and floodplain oversight. This position ensures integration of the Waterways Bureau’s activities and policies with other programs. The position plays a key role in developing and implementing statewide policy by serving on the Waterways Leadership Team (WLT).

As a manager and supervisor, you will be responsible for the leadership of the Waterways Bureau regulatory program within a dynamic work area. Other important roles include development of program staff, contribution to the success of statewide waterway programs, developing and supporting a range of effective internal and external partnership relationships as a member of the management of waterways and wetlands on an integrated watershed approach. You will assist in setting statewide policy on program management issues and assure consistency and compliance with statewide policy in regional activities and operations. You will be expected to participate in regional supervisory meetings and promote cross program integration with other program supervisors and staff when needed.

This is one of four positions statewide with responsibility as a Waterways Program Field Supervisor. The position is located in the South Central or West Central Region and covers approximately 18 Counties. Travel within the assigned area will be frequent, with periodic travel to staff office locations.

Salary Information

Starting pay is $43.00 – $48.00 per hour ($89,440 – $99,840 annually) in pay schedule and range 81-02.

Pay on appointment for current or former state employees is based on the State Compensation Plan.

This positions include an excellent benefits package, including health care, vacation, sick leave, and retirement benefits. A two-year trial period may be required.

Job Details

Employment will require the selected candidate to pass a background check. DNR does not sponsor work visas. Thus, in compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.

Qualifications

Required qualifications include experience in the following:

  • In a water resource field or similar experience in a natural resource field
  • Directly mentoring or supervising staff
  • Applying or using local, state or federal environmental laws

Best-qualified applicants will also have the following preferred qualifications:

  • Experience leading or facilitating multi-disciplinary teams working on state-wide or high-profile projects
  • Experience with preparing and implementing strategic plans including goals, objectives and priorities
  • Applied knowledge of the public trust doctrine related to navigable waters
