Considered the plastic pollution in the ocean has a devastating impact on marine life and ecosystems, it will constitute primary focus. Reducing the presence of plastic in our oceans will protect marine species and ecosystems, and will also help us fighting climate change and working towards a more sustainable future.
In the UN Environmental Assembly in 2022 governments requested the UN Environment Programme to convene an intergovernmental negotiating committee with the mandate to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, commencing its work during the second half of 2022. The successful candidate will be responsible for engaging in this critical process and informing CDP’s approach to breaking the plastic wave engaging on the policy dialogue globally. Further, they will work with multiple teams across CDP and external partners to ensure the highest impact is achieved, contributing through policy work, to deliver key interventions such as market research, indicator development, capacity building, integration into CDP’s existing thematic strategies.

About the Global Policy Team
This role sits within the Global Policy Team, a dynamic group of committed policy professionals that engage with policy actors at global, regional and national level to advance the CDP Agenda.
Key responsibilities include:
CDP is seeking a highly motivated individual to help us mapping the existing plastics policy landscape, boost government ambition, accelerate mandatory plastic reporting and support evidence-based policy making. You will be responsible for identifying the best way CDP can play a pivotal and strategic role in tackling this urgent agenda.
You will have the following skills and experience:
- Map the policy landscape, in particular associated with disclosure and conducive policy environment, as well as global treaties, as well key stakeholders
- Develop a plastics policy strategy, informed by the landscape assessment, that enables CDP to maximize its unique impact and supports partners to boost political will on the subject matter
- Engage with policymakers and international organizations, including the Open-ended working group on the end of use of plastic with the ultimate objective of advancing evidence-based policy making
- Develop policy recommendations on plastic disclosures for corporates, financial institutions and cities
- Engage with selected policy makers to support the implementation of mandatory plastic disclosure policies that are either informed by or rely on CDP’s platform.
- Engage with relevant international organizations and networks that can amplify our messages
- Boost plastic-related knowledge and capacity of CDP’s Global Policy Team
- Support the CDP Disclosure team with intelligence and direction coming from policy
If you are a motivated self-starter who enjoys taking ownership of a project and you want to contribute significantly to the vital work of CDP in catalyzing action on plastics pollution and usage, this is the role for you.
Essential criteria:
- Demonstrable expertise in plastic pollution/usage issues and its place in the transition to a circular economy including knowledge of policies for reducing plastics pollution, metrics for mapping corporate total plastic footprint.
- An understanding of the role of international organisations, national and sub-national governments, regulators and cities in tackling the plastic crisis and the intersection between public and private action.
- At least 3 years of relevant work experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
- A high level of self-motivation and drive.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with teams of individuals and colleagues
- Fluency in English and working proficiency in another language
This is an exciting role in a burgeoning program that we hope to expand across the globe as CDP expands its work.
Desirable criteria (optional)
- Experience of leading the development of program strategies.
- Relevant work experience, ideally in public policy, regulatory affairs, the corporate or investor sector, additional environmental NGO or corporate sustainability experience is an advantage.
This is a fixed term role for 12 months with the aim of renewal, depending on performance and funding and will be based in the CDP office in either London or Berlin with options for remote/hybrid working. The post holder will be reporting into the Global Director Policy Engagement and External Affairs, working closely with the Sr. Policy Manager – Water and the CDP’s Associate Director, Ocean Health.
Salary and benefits:
Salary £35,000 – £40,000 (or equivalent in Euros) depending on experience, 30 days’ holiday, generous non-contributory pension and life assurance provision, very flexible, hybrid working arrangement tailored to meet individual needs as well as organisational needs, excellent Wellbeing programme, well established training & development opportunities, other benefits and a collaborative and collegiate and often fun working environment.
