The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring a water quality staff engineer for our Technical Services Division located in the State Office in Boise, Idaho.
A one-time $5,000 RECRUITMENT BONUS is offered for this position.
Recruitment bonus criteria must be met.
The staff engineer performs professional engineering and related administrative work to assist the water, waste, and mining programs with reviewing engineering projects.
Positions established at the staff engineer level may be underfilled at the associate or engineer-in-training levels. After successfully completing a training plan, meeting the minimum qualifications for the staff engineer level, and receiving a professional engineering license, the employee will be reclassified and compensated as a staff engineer.

**THE ENGINEER INTERN CLASSIFICATION IS NOT AN INTERNSHIP. It is a full time, classified position with the State of Idaho Department of Environmental Quality.Example of Duties
- Review and approve drinking water and wastewater construction project plans and specifications.
- Review and approve drinking water and wastewater design reports and facility plans.
- Inspect drinking water, wastewater, and other permitted facilities.
- Oversee state and federally funded drinking water and wastewater projects.
- Analyze landfill design and construction documents.
- Conduct lead and copper corrosion studies.
- Assist stakeholders in understanding and complying with state and federal environmental rules through outreach efforts.
- Analyze, interpret, and apply federal, state, and local laws when applying professional engineering principles and practices including Idaho Rules for Public Drinking Water Systems, Idaho’s Wastewater Rules, Federal Clean Water Act, and Federal Safe Drinking Water Act.
- Prepare technical and programmatic correspondence and reports, summarizing technical reviews of projects.
- Evaluate, analyze, and interpret engineering reports and engineering plans and specifications.
- Evaluate quality assurance methods, reports, and plans to ensure data meets desired goals and objectives.
- Manage the enhanced sanitary survey backlog.
- Manage geotechnical engineering projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet one of the following qualifications:
- Graduation from a four-year Engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) PLUS within six (6) months of hire receive certification by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers as an Engineer Intern
- OR Certification as an EIT from another jurisdiction that included graduation from a four-year engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET)
- OR graduation from a four-year engineering curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) PLUS verification that the candidate has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination.

Physical requirements:
- Ability to sit and work on a computer for 2-4 hours at a time
- Ability to reach and bend for filing purposes
- Some periods of heavy reading and typing required
- Ability to lift 30 pounds when working with file boxes
- Some travel may be required
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Ability to climb ladders, staircases, work on uneven terrain
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds over rough terrain
- Ability to work in adverse or inclement weather
- Ability to work in extreme hot or cold temperatures both outside and inside
- Must be able to wear a respirator
- Ability to work on elevated instrument platforms, ladders, etc.
- Field sites may involve working near and with drilling rigs, backhoes, trucks and other large equipment in rough terrain

- May work in vicinity of loud noise
- Eyesight needs to be 20/20 (as corrected) to observe field compliance
