Job Title: Postdoctoral Scholar (Watershed and Water Quality Modeling)

Department: FAES | Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering

A postdoctoral scholar position is available immediately in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University (OSU). The postdoc will lead application and source code improvement for watershed modeling in the western Lake Erie basin using an existing Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The primary research focus for this position will be to implement parameter and source code modifications for improving (1) the model representation of legacy phosphorus (P) transport processes, (2) the theoretical framework of P transport through soil and tile drainage pathways, and (3) calibration and validation using field- and watershed-scale observed data. The selected candidate will work under projects funded by the USDA and in partnership with USDA Agricultural Research Service and research collaborators at multiple institutions.

In addition to leading modeling efforts, the postdoc will be expected to disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publication and presentation at professional meetings. The postdoc will have the opportunity to develop new research ideas within the broader context of the project. This is a term position subject to annual renewals based on availability of funding. The position will be located on the Columbus, Ohio campus. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Vinayak Shedekar, Research Scientist of Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Ph.D. by date of hire with a strong academic background in agricultural engineering, ecological engineering, environmental engineering, hydrology, or closely related field
  • Experience writing peer-reviewed manuscripts

Required skills

  • Experience using and modifying the source code of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT)
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as FORTRAN, R, MATLAB, Python
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with interdisciplinary teams and mentor students

Duty Description:

70% FTE: Improve theoretical framework of watershed model based on laboratory studies and validate the framework using observed field-scale data

30 % FTE: Prepare research papers and manuscripts for submission, publication, and presentation at conferences, workshops and participate in the proposal writing/submission
