The Natural Resources Commission (NRC) was established in 2004, by the Natural Resources Commission Act 2003, with a broad function of providing the Government with independent credible advice on managing natural resources in the social, economic and environmental interests of NSW. The Commission is an executive agency in the cluster of Planning and Environment.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Principal Advisor who has experience working on water management and planning particularly under the NSW Water Management Act 2000. You will provide advice and support to the team on water management issues across NSW and build the capacity of existing team members to support the water advice the Commission provides to the government.

Primary purpose of the role

To provide expert analysis and advice on specific natural resource management (NRM) issues, build knowledge networks and the Commission’s capacity in nominated practice areas so that the Commission delivers robust, independent quality advice to Government

Essential requirements:

  • Demonstrates skills of critical and creative thinking and knowledge sharing
  • High level verbal and written communication skills and establisehd credibility and influence within the broader NRC sector
  • Tertiary qualifications in environmental or agricultural science, economics, social science, natural resource management, engineering or law
  • A deep understanding of natural resource, particularly water management issues.
  • Evidence of ability to own and expand a body of knowledge and develop it into an accessible area of specialisation
  • Manages multiple tasks and projects in a complex, challenging environment with proven ability to deliver outcomes in a high-pressure environment
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to commencement.

About You

The successful applicant will have a passion for water, understand the competing priorities with stakeholder engagement and will be able to work as part of a team. You will be committed to working with stakeholders, organisations, and other government sector team members to improve natural resource management outcomes for all citizens of New South Wales.  

Responsibilities

  • Leads nominated aspects of complex projects to ensure the Commission provides credible independent advice framed at the right scale and reflecting best available knowledge for the task.
  • Provides expert advice and information to inform relevant stakeholders and support recommendations.
  • Builds knowledge networks, and relationships with partners and develops own knowledge and expertise to enable a range of others to integrate knowledge across disciplines into projects.
  • Provides value adding analysis, peer review and quality assurance support in agreed practice areas to Directors and Advisors across teams so that quality and consistency of approaches are extended.
  • Communicates externally to build the Commission’s profile, credibility and influence amongst the NRM community and broader stakeholder groups.
  • Proactively mentors and guides the Commission staff in the development of their knowledge and expertise and contributes to building capacity in their practice area over time.
  • Project manages various projects as requested.
  • Collaborates and contributes to building the Commission’s team and culture, overall capacity and impact.

ROLE NOTES

This is an ongoing role (38 hours per week). We are committed to offering a flexible and inclusive workplace including the option to work from home. The hours/days are negotiable.
