  • Undertake independent research on the effectiveness of Nature-Based Solutions to flood mitigation
  • Become part of a dynamic team with a positive culture addressing climate change adaptation

ICEDS has recently commenced a national initiative funded by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) – Partnering with local communities in regional Australia to increase resilience to flood risk. A key objective is to partner with regional communities to develop Australian guidelines for integration of nature-based approaches to flood resilience. This role will research the effectiveness and multiple benefits of nature-based solutions in the context of flood mitigation in the Richmond River Catchment in Northern NSW. This project will be undertaken in parallel with a CSIRO flood study funded by NEMA, which is developing a model and scenarios for flood mitigation in the Richmond River catchment The position will provide a suite of solutions for evaluation in the CSIRO Flood Model for the Richmond Catchment.

You will be a member of ICEDS, accountable to Dr Roslyn Prinsley, Head, Disaster Solutions. You will be co-supervised by Associate Professor Barry Croke from the ANU Mathematical Sciences Institute and the Institute of Water Futures; and by Dr Carmel Pollino and Dr Jai Vaze from CSIRO.

With a strong focus on research and engagement, you will have experience in hydrology and ecology and the relationship to flood protection and water management. The role has a strong focus on research. The successful candidate will work closely with social scientists, wetland ecologists, ecohydrologists, and water resource engineers to develop, assess, and communicate Nature-Based Solution design alternatives. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field (i.e. ecology, hydrology, environmental science, environmental engineering, or closely related field). You should be excited about working in an interdisciplinary team, interacting with community partners, and conducting both strategic and applied research.

You are someone who prefers to work collegially, leading by example to develop and maintain effective, productive and beneficial workplace relationships within the academic and professional staff, students and honorary appointees, as well as with industry stakeholders. This position will also have a mentoring role for students and will engage in collegial and productive collaborations with local, national and where possible, international colleagues.

To excel in this role, you will have a PhD (or awarding of a PhD within six months of appointment commencement) in ecology, hydrology, environmental science, environmental engineering or equivalent qualifications and experience in a related area, with a track record of independent research in the field of ecology or hydrology as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. You will be a strong communicator and collaborator with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
