Job description

Do you have a passion for protecting our precious water? Are you motivated by the chance to influence the way national water resources infrastructure is developed? If so, this may be the opportunity for you.

Water companies are developing a number of regionally and nationally important Strategic Resource Options (SROs) such as reservoirs and water transfers through an ambitious timeline to be construction ready by 2025-2030.

Working with area and national technical specialists across the business and a range of stakeholders including RAPID, water companies and consultants, your role will involve leading technical water resources and hydrological assessment of SROs.

This role will involve ensuring a consistent approach is taken to hydrological monitoring and assessment, supporting assessments of water availability and reviewing the calibration, validation and outputs of hydrological models to understand future impact and operation of SROs. This role will support progress of these large infrastructure projects through an ambitious development and planning timeline.

You will ensure that water resources assessments are fit for the future by keeping track of developments in water resources legislation, strategy and policy.

Your great communications skills and ability to build relationships quickly will help you excel in this role.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team

In this technical role you will work with the National Appraisal Unit (NAU) to oversee the environmental assessments of strategic water resources supply options and provide timely, consistent and robust evidence-based recommendations to RAPID and other key stakeholders.

The role is part of a dispersed team and is not location constrained. As well as being part of the NAU, the role will involve working as part of internal and external virtual teams along with RAPID.

Experience/skills required

We are seeking an individual with water resources and hydrological modelling experience. You’ll be qualified to at least degree standard in a relevant discipline, and have experience working on multi-stakeholder projects, as well as delivering results to tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will have all/a majority, of the following skills:
• Highly motivated self-starter/self-learner with good interpersonal skills and commitment to continuous improvement.
• Experience of developing and interpreting and applying Abstraction Licensing Strategies and supporting water availability resource assessments
• Experience of hydraulic and/or hydro-ecological modelling
• Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships.
• Ability to identify potential problems and proactively innovate solutions
• Adept at working both collaboratively, as part of a virtual team, and independently
• Ability to handle multiple work streams and priorities
