About Us:
The Natural Resources Stewardship Program (NatuReS) is a global programme aimed at facilitating partnerships with private companies to secure natural resources, particularly in areas exposed to high water risks. Based on the partnership approach, the program promotes multi-stakeholder cooperation between the private and public sectors, as well as civil society to effectively manage natural resources in a sustainable manner. In doing so, the program builds on the work and successes of its predecessor programme the International Water Stewardship Program (IWaSP).  NatuReS currently operates in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda and South Africa. This position will support the activities in South Africa.

The contract period for this position is until 30 September 2024 – in line with commission period of the Project.

To be considered you need the following:

Qualifications

  • Relevant post-graduate qualification in Natural Science Management, Water Resource Management, Environmental Science, Social Science, Development Studies, Health Sciences, Education, or a related field.

Professional Experience

Qualification should be enhanced by at least 5 to 7 years’ relevant working experience, including experience in Stakeholder Coordination, Concept Development and Implementation.

  • Experience with working within the GIZ development partnership context as well as a mature understanding of the GIZs advisory approach, operating system, inter-programme collaboration and modes of delivery is prerequisite.
  • Prior experience and professional networks in managing and overseeing multi-partner stakeholder will be regarded as an added advantage.
  • Experience with local economic development initiatives, collaboration with the private sector or social inclusion, and or governance arrangements will be advantageous.
  • Strong intercultural competence, empathy, communication, cooperation, and consultation skills.
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a national and global team.
  • Experienced in collaborating with partners from public and private sector and in advising partner institutions on WASH or systems related matters.
  • Experience with public private partnerships and the management and oversight of joint initiatives.
  • Several years of professional experience working in or collaborating with the education sector in South Africa on systems development, national or regional campaigns and the integration of management systems.
  • Familiar with water stewardship and the application of the stewardship standards and practice.
  • Ability to conduct data collection and monitoring activities.
  • Learning and development skills, adaptability, resilience as well as performance and goal orientation.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING

  • Responsible for overseeing the WinS (WASH in Schools) project implementation between Unilever, the Department of Education, GIZ and other leading NGOs  in South Africa. Together with South African partners and in close consultation with GIZ WASH experts, you will develop a comprehensive concept for WinS O&M for South Africa that is  inspired by the GIZ’s global Fit for Schools approach and its Unilever collaboration,
  • A draw lessons from the Unilever Domestos’ Cleaner Toilets, Brighter Future (CTBF)/janitor programme that is aimed at improving O&M of sanitation facilities through providing instructions, guidance, materials, and consumables on a school-by-school basis.
  • Support institutional strengthening activities for improved school management systems that combines infrastructure as well surface and environmental hygiene as responses to pandemic preparedness and emergency responses (PPR).  

The Technical WASH Advisor is expected to undertake the following tasks:

Advising the partner institution(s):

  • Support the oversight and implementation of project/programme plans and activities in close consultation with counterparts
  • Contribute to preparing and implementing site-based projects and joint project/programme activities
  • Lead on design, preparation and implementation of workshops, seminars, and other inter-school/ multi-sectoral learning events on WinS topics
  • Support the quality assurance measures and initiatives that will enhance the work of NatuReS and GIZ Africa WinS network
  • Collaboration with the National Department of Basic Education and other related intergovernmental partners on the design and strengthening of monitoring mechanisms in support of O&M of sanitation facilities and PPR measures in schools
  • Collaboration. liaison and technical advisory to pilot schools in selected sites on implementation of WinS activities.

Networking and cooperation:

  • Support the cooperation, and maintain good working relations with pilot schools, Department of Basic Education and its provisional bodies, relevant private sector stakeholders, education institutions and WinS relevant non-governmental agencies governmental agencies,
  • Ensure needs-based alignment with project objectives and encourage sharing ideas and information for the benefit of the project and education sector and global WInS sector 

Knowledge Management:

  • Contribute to ready-to-use strategies and technical concepts, including guidelines, manuals, and procedures
  • The management of data collection, analysis and monitoring linked to this partnership
  • Development of knowledge products, knowledge management, communication material and the active promotion of WinS on relevant digital platforms
  • Adapt GIZ developed material to the South African context and design South Africa specific material for utilisation in pilot schools.
  • Document management and the preparation of official progress and impact reports linked to this assignment
  • Support research activities and studies on content issues relating to WinS South Africa and multi-stakeholder partnership implementation approaches
  • Ensure knowledge transfer of project/programme information

Coordination of tasks:

  • Assist with general project planning and development of project concepts including preparation, organisation and moderation of planning exercises and their implementation, management, monitoring, quality management, evaluation,communication and documentation
  • Coordinate relevant WinS project activities at site level in consultation with the manager and in cooperation with programme partners, both about implementation and preparing organisational aspects,
  • Maintain links between South African partners and schools and the GIZ global and Africa WinS network
  • The co-design of a capacity initiative for school managers to improve WinS services and contribute to strengthening PPR measures.
  • Where appropriate, you will align WASH in Schools initiative with the NatuReS global programme implementation plan and elevate the WinS thematic area in our water stewardship advocacy

  • NatuReS is located within the GIZ Centre for Cooperation with the Private Sector in Pretoria. The incumbent is therefore expected to contribute to the overall objectives and vision of CCPS in executing tasks for NatuReS
  • Own transport as well be in possession of a valid Code B (unendorsed) driver’s license
  • Considerable travel within SA is expected  
  • This position is based in Pretoria with extensive national and potentially international travel to selected sites
  • This position is based at GIZ in HatfieldPretoria.

Additional Information on this Project: As a global programme, NatuReS collaborates on public-private partnerships to further improve the know-how and joint impact for meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To this end, NatuReS together with GIZ’s global Fit for Schools programme and Unilever PTY (Ltd) are working together in South Africa on an adapted WASH (Water, Sanitation, and hygiene) in Schools partnership. The project is aimed at strengthening operation and maintenance (O&M) of WASH services in selected South African schools as well as fostering resilience, preparedness and effective responses to COVID-19 and other future pandemic events.  It is highly collaborative and draws on the lessons, insights, instruments, and tools of a host of GIZ supported programmes. 
NatuReS is part of the GIZ Centre for Collaboration with the Private Sector (CCPS), which promotes private sector engagement in development initiatives
