A growing and effective conservation organization seeks to hire a conservation professional to join its water resources team as the Western Water Policy Associate. The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) is looking for a talented individual to advance the TRCP’s voice and mission on federal and state water resource policies affecting the Lower Colorado River Basin and other priority western watersheds.

The Western Water Policy Associate will be responsible for developing and participating in campaigns to further the organization’s work to advance federal and state policies that increase the pace and scale of aquatic restoration and conservation efforts in the Lower Colorado River Basin to build long-term climate resilience while maximizing benefits for fish and wildlife. This individual will work to strategically grow the TRCP’s presence throughout the Lower Colorado River Basin, identify new campaign opportunities, and support ongoing TRCP campaigns in other Colorado River Basin states. Finally, this individual will support TRCP’s Water Resources Working Group and engagement in maintaining federal protections for wetlands that sustain fish and wildlife.

This is not an entry-level position, and prior experience in conservation advocacy, western water management/policy, and campaign development and implementation is required. This person must understand the voice and values of the hunt-fish community and be eager to further the TRCP’s mission to guarantee all Americans quality places to hunt and fish. An appreciation for hunting, angling, and outdoor recreation is required; experience doing so is preferred.

This position is remote within Arizona, with easy access to major airports. Strategic locations within the Lower Colorado River Basin (e.g., southern Utah or Nevada) or the Four Corners region may be considered. Candidates must have reliable internet and the ability to travel around the region. The TRCP offers a generous benefits package, including health, dental, vision, and life insurance, 401k, cell phone and home internet reimbursement, and ample paid time off.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Work directly with decision-makers, federal and state agencies, and hunting and fishing organizations to lead and support campaigns with a focus on reducing barriers to accessing public funds to increase the pace and scale of aquatic restoration and conservation efforts that enhance watershed resilience to aridification and other natural hazards and promoting restoration workforce development opportunities in Arizona and the broader Lower Colorado River Basin.

Develop and lead state-level policies in Arizona that reduce barriers to accessing federal funds to support aquatic restoration and conservation efforts and furthering other hunting and fishing priorities.

Work with the TRCP Communications team to increase the visibility of TRCP’s western water policy work and partnerships through blogs and various media.

Cultivate and foster relationships with foundations to secure additional resources necessary to expand campaign work in the region.

Building relationships and representing TRCP in meetings with key leaders from state and national conservation groups and businesses, state and federal agency personnel, and elected decision-makers.

Provide support for current TRCP campaigns in the Colorado River Basin and other priority western watersheds as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

2+ years of experience in the hunting, fishing and/or conservation policy arena, including previous campaign, agency and/or nonprofit experience.

Experience with Colorado River Basin management and/or western water management issues, particularly within Arizona.

Background in federal water policy, including the Clean Water Act and the federal legislative process, is helpful but not a necessity.

The ability to build & maintain strong working relationships with state & federal agency staff, nonprofit partner organizations, elected decision-makers, & diverse interest groups. Experience working with Arizona watershed and conservation organizations and/or other key stakeholders a plus.

Ability to work independently and coordinate multiple priorities within a diverse project and policy portfolio.

Excellent communications, analytical, writing, and research skills.
