Offer Description

He/she will ensure that the simulation protocol (already established) is duly followed, including the proper output of all required variables. The analyses encompass comparisons with atmospheric and hydrologic observations in the past, with the results of climate simulations by other climate models (involved in BLUEGEM, CMIP6, and other projects if relevant), as well as focused analyses on land-atmosphere coupling or extreme events. The researcher will also present his/her results to the BLUEGEM project members, in international conferences, and in high-level scientific journals.

The proposed work contributes to the international project BLUEGEM, which aims at exploring the evolutions of groundwater, irrigation, and climate throughout the Anthropocene (1900-2100), to better understand their coupling, foresee their potential changes, and identify possible social consequences. These assessments are of paramount importance for identifying sustainable pathways with respect to water resources, food security, biodiversity, notwithstanding human well-being and socio-economic activities (details in www.metis.upmc.fr/~ducharne/bluegem).

The hired researcher will run and analyse several coupled climate simulations with the IPSL-CM6 model over the 1900-2100 period to understand the impact of irrigation on the past and future climatic evolution, and to explore whether the planned expansion of irrigation in future scenarios may be challenged by the lack of water resources.

The Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL) is a research federation that brings together 10 laboratories in Ile-de-France working on the links between the climate system and the environment. A structuring tool is its climate model, involved in all the international climate projection exercices feeding the IPCC reports.
The proposed position is based in Paris, at Sorbonne University in the laboratory METIS (Environmental media, transfers and interactions in hydrosystems and soils : www.metis.upmc.fr/), which conducts multidisciplinary research on the functioning and evolution of continental environments, focusing on processes that affect the transfers of water, and chemical elements in the soil, sub-surface and aquatic environments. The hired researcher will work under the guidance of Agnès Ducharne, senior scientist at METIS and PI of the BLUEGEM project.
He/she will benefit from access to up to date supercalculators, and a stimulating scientific environment, at IPSL and via the international project BLUEGEM, which both promote young scientists
