The Colorado Division of Water Resources (DWR) seeks a Geoscientist/Hydrogeologist to assist staff within the Hydrogeology Section Department. The position will be working on a project to provide data to the National Groundwater Monitoring Network (NGWMN) as well as other duties of the Section.

DWR has a Cooperative Agreement with the US Geological Survey to add water-level sites within the Lower South Platte Alluvial Aquifer to the NGWMN.  You will be reviewing the current monitoring wells and selecting the best wells to add to the network in accordance with the framework of the NGWMN.

Specific job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing the current Colorado groundwater-level monitoring wells and selecting the best wells to add to the national network in accordance with the framework of the NGWMN. 
  • Confirming the well construction and lithology data for each new well site.
  •  Completion of manual data entry for available well construction information and transposing available handwritten lithology information into an electronic database by assigning standard lithology categories and descriptions.
  • Entering groundwater levels into online databases.
  • Processing and uploading data from continuous monitoring equipment.
  • Processing incoming geophysical logs and associated files, and other database-related tasks. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

The employee will have a hybrid office (Tuesday-Thursday) and remote work schedule with a computer and monitors provided by DWR.  DWR cannot provide or reimburse for internet service. Starting date will be early to mid January 2023. Temporary employees are not eligible for benefits or leave, All employees are required to contribute to their own retirement plan. Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:High school diploma or GED. 

AND 

Two years of engineering or physical sciences (geology/hydrogeology/hydrology)  assistant experience in water resources that involves the administration of water measurement, control, and/or distribution.    

Substitutions: 

  • Satisfactory completion of course work from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university in civil engineering, engineering science, environmental engineering, mining engineering, earth science, geology, or field of study closely related to the work assignment will be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. 
  • If you are using a degree to substitute for the required experience, you may be required to provide copies of your educational transcripts for verification of your qualifications if requested.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets and MS Access (or other database management systems) is preferred.
  • The preferred candidate will have a geoscience Bachelor’s degree with relevant geologic and hydrologic science course work, or at least 2 years of schooling in this field.
  • Knowledge of DWR/CDSS Online Tools, ArcGIS,  and relevant job experience in groundwater monitoring, monitoring well construction, geologic mapping, lithologic logging, geophysical logs, and/or water rights administration is a plus. 
  • Experience with computers and writing documents.
