Kōrero mō ngā Tūranga – About the roles
Tapuwae Ahuwhenua – Agriculture and Investment Services (AIS) is seeking expressions of interest for multiple roles within its newly-established Māori Agribusiness Climate and Water Team.
We have exciting opportunities for Advisers to establish and deliver two new climate change programmes led by Māori. The effects of a changing climate are already being felt by whenua Māori and the Māori primary sector. Our programmes will be designed to enable Māori landowners and agribusinesses to understand and then respond to the challenges, now and into the future, drawing on tikanga and mātauranga ā-rohe.
The Climate and Water Team has three key pieces of work:
- A Māori-led research and development programme to explore low emissions options for whenua Māori.
- A tikanga-based programme with tools, resources and kaiārahi (regional advisers) working directly with Māori landowners and agribusinesses to understand and respond to the challenges of climate change on their whenua.
- A freshwater-focused programme that supports access to tools, resources and expertise to build and enhance capability and capacity of Māori landowners and agribusinesses to respond to the challenges of freshwater management regulations.
The Climate and Water Team is one of five teams within MPI’s Māori Agribusiness directorate. The other teams’ efforts focus on bringing groups together to encourage shared learning and mentoring, exploring growth opportunities across their primary sector interests, promoting innovation, supporting primary sector workforce initiatives for Māori, and to provide expert advice that informs best land use options.

Ko wai koe? – About you
You’ll be joining us at an exciting time as we design, develop and implement the Climate Change Programme in its first year. The roles will work closely with Māori landowners, agribusinesses and entities, as well as creating strong connections across MPI, including with our regional Māori Agribusiness colleagues to contribute to the success of our programmes.
You may currently be working in the primary sector, on the marae, within the science and climate change communities, or working within taiao units of hapū or iwi organisations. You will have strong communication and engagement skills and will be passionate about delivering projects led by groups’ tikanga and mātauranga.
You’ll understand primary sector operating systems but will be supported with training to further develop your subject matter expertise in the field of agricultural emissions and mitigation options.
You’ll be developing strong networks with key external groups to ensure the programmes are integrated with other initiatives such as the establishment of the new Centre for Climate Action on Agricultural Emissions, On Farm Support, and industry extension programmes.
