Where you’ll be working 
The Water Unit is part of the Environmental Health Branch in Health Protection NSW, which works with a network of local Public Health Units across the state. The Water Unit is responsible for public health regulation, policies and programs relating drinking water, fluoridation wastewater, water recycling, recreational waters, swimming pools and spa pools.

What you’ll be doing 
The Senior Project Officer will:

  • Develop and implement strategies and policies to protect public health and support the provision of safe drinking water by more than 80 public water utilities.
  • Develop and implement programs to maintain and increase the access to fluoridated drinking water in NSW.
  • Support Public Health Units and water suppliers to develop and implement risk-based drinking water management and support NSW Health response to water incidents.
  • Provide specialist public health advice on a range of water-related issues, including drinking water, fluoridation, wastewater recycling, effluent disposal, recreational water and swimming pools. Support NSW Health’s relationship with water utilities and laboratories.
  • Advise the Chief Health Officer, Minister, Public Health Units, regulators, local councils, the water industry and the community in relation to water quality and public health. Represent NSW Health at high level inter-agency meetings.

Selection Criteria 

  1. High level knowledge of water quality and health, including issues relating to drinking water, fluoridation, recycled water and recreational water.
  2. Proven experience in consulting effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including Public Health Units, laboratories, Government agencies, water utilities, local government and/or Aboriginal communities.
  3. High level oral and written communication skills, including capacity to prepare high quality reports, briefings and correspondence and the ability to effectively represent NSW Health at high-level meetings.
  4. Capacity to work with minimal supervision and to undertake a diverse range of tasks, and work to meet tight deadlines.
  5. Tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in public health, environmental health, engineering, chemistry, microbiology or other relevant science discipline.
  6. Desirable – current NSW driver’s licence and capacity and willingness to travel overnight in regional NSW and occasionally interstate.
  7. Willingness to participate in an on-call roster out of hours.

COVID-19 Vaccination Compliancy 
All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.
Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
