Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for two hydrologists to join the Hydrology Team in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (DCIS) Area. We have one permanent post available and a 12 month fixed term contract. You will be joining us at a critical time in the management of water resources in the Area as we respond to an ongoing drought incident and prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change on water availability.

We are looking for technical leaders who can provide specialist hydrology expertise to help manage and protect the water environment and maintain public water supplies.

You will:
• Lead on providing hydrological analysis and advice to support the ongoing drought incident.
• Lead on providing hydrological analysis for environmental decision-making in work areas including Catchment Abstraction Management Strategies, the Water Industry National Environment Programme, Water Framework Directive, water company Water Resource Management and Drought Plans, helping manage our hydrometric network, restoring sustainable abstraction and abstraction licence permitting/compliance assessment.
• Provide technical advice and guidance to internal and external customers and partners.
• Support the team leader in determining technical direction and priorities for the team and manage key areas of the team’s work programme.
• Support, coach and mentor other hydrologists in the team.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training will be available to support you with your incident role. There is a wide range of incident roles available to suit different individual circumstances.

The team

You will join a friendly and supportive team of hydrologists based in our offices in Exeter and Bodmin. The team work closely with other technical teams and also with external customers and partners to help protect and enhance DCIS’s water environment. You will play a critical role within the team, working on some of the most challenging issues facing water resources and providing workable solutions.

Experience/skills required

You’ll have a degree in a relevant technical discipline and at least two years’ relevant experience. You will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

• Good understanding and experience of hydrology concepts.
• Ability to analyse, interpret and visualise data to inform problem solving and decision making.
• Good communication skills and the ability to present convincing verbal and written ideas at all levels.
• Ability to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers.
• Experience of coaching and mentoring others on technical issues.
• Ability to work under own initiative and as part of a dispersed team.

Contact and additional information

We expect candidates for the permanent role to be based in the Area but will consider applications for the fixed term contract role from people who are able to work remotely.

You will be required to travel to other office locations and undertake site visits. A full UK driving licence is therefore essential.

Please note that your answers to the questions below will be used for interview selection. Using the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result) may help to formulate your answers. Please use hydrology examples where possible.

Interviews will be held in late April/early May 2023.
