How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

Under the general guidance and direction of a Senior Project Manager, Restoration Projects, this position is responsible for engaging with communities and private landowners/residents to encourage sustainable behavior and take stewardship and restorative action on-the-ground.

The program provides technical assistance and financial incentive to the farm and rural non-farm community in the Regions of Peel and York to achieve their environmental and stewardship goals. Specifically, the program’s goals are:

  • To promote and facilitate the adoption of environmentally sound land management practices to protect, restore, and enhance surface and ground water, air and soil quality and/or fish and wildlife habitat in the Regions of Peel and York;
  • To support Region of Peel/York farmers and agricultural organizations as valuable contributors to the environment, community and economy; 
  • To protect agricultural lands as a natural resource of major importance in the Regions of Peel/York;
  • To promote healthy rural communities that respect the natural environment and water resources;
  • To seek partnerships with others invested in agri-environmental protection in order to leverage resources and obtain greater environmental impact for dollars spent.

Overall, this position plays an integral role in supporting the Living City Vision through the implementation of environmental improvement projects that address:

  • Rural water quality;
  • Environmental enhancement and sustainability; and,
  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist Project Managers in implementing the Rural Clean Water Program in the TRCA jurisdiction within Peel and York Regions, and the ALUS Peel pilot project in the TRCA jurisdiction within Peel Region.
  • Outreach and liaison with rural and agricultural landowners, advertise the program, and encourage enrollment in TRCA’s agricultural programs.
  • Effectively communicate technical knowledge and information to private landowners regarding the financial cost share grant programs available to the agricultural community, including the voluntary Environmental Farm Plan process.
  • Support the preparation of project correspondence including project plans, external communications and reports of a general and technical nature.
  • Attend and present at agricultural fairs and farm events to promote TRCA’s agricultural programs.
  • Assist Project Managers in preparing funding proposals for agricultural programs and projects and maps/reports on technical and/or field conditions.
  • Perform desktop and field assessments to identify ecological restoration opportunities and Best Management Practices.
  • Communicate with internal departments/staff to update corporate databases as required.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

What will you need to succeed:

  • Post-secondary Degree or Diploma with a focus on Environmental, Agricultural Sciences, Ecological Restoration and/or Resource Management.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License.
  • Thorough understanding of ecological principles related to current farming practices, nutrient management and Environmental Farm Plans (EFPs).
  • Special event coordination and planning experience.
  • Specialty in urban agriculture and farming experience an asset; knowledge about general farm practices (manure, crop types, tillage, livestock, etc.)
  • Computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office, GIS, and Lotus Notes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (regular interaction with public, committees, neighbouring CAs, government agencies, like-minded organizations).
