Are you passionate about evidence-based environmental policy?

We’re looking for a Science & Research Officer who will be responsible for coordinating SAS’s scientific research – providing the evidence base for much of our political advocacy and campaign work. You will be undertaking in-depth research into topics within our four campaign areas which include water quality, the ocean and climate emergency, plastic pollution, and ocean recovery.

You will sit in the Campaigns & Policy team, line managed by the Policy Manager, working with the team and other colleagues to inform our campaign work, actions and support our communities in driving local change. You will use your knowledge, expertise and attention to detail to provide the evidence we need to make waves, drive change and tackle the threats facing the ocean.

You will bring

Experience in managing primary and secondary research projects.
Expertise in using a variety of methodologies to generate data and inform policy development.
Experience analysing qualitative and quantitative policy-relevant or environmental data.
Strong literature searching, reviewing and critical appraisal skills.
Excellent science communication skills including written work to a publishable standard.
Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to distil complex findings.
Knowledge and passion for ocean conservation and/or environmental and water quality research, policy and legislation.
A critically thinking mind, delivering high-quality insights and outputs across a range of research projects.
Expertise to advise senior colleagues on technical information.
Experience managing stakeholders and suppliers to deliver reports for external audiences.
Creativity to lead the development of ways to visualise data and tailor to audiences.
A head for figures to manage budgets, and excellent IT skills.

You should have

A commitment to teamworking, including the emotional intelligence to receive and give constructive feedback.
A can do attitude, getting involved with any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the post.
A full, clean UK driving licence and willingness to travel within the UK, with occasional overnight stays.
