The Ministry of Forests (the Ministry) is the province’s land manager, responsible for stewardship of Provincial Crown land, cultural and natural resources. The Ministry also is responsible for the flood safety and drought management programs in BC and collaborates with the Provincial Emergency Program in the efforts to protect public health and safety related to these types of events. The Ministry plays a leadership role by providing guidance in respect of dike safety and land use management and supports other provincial and local government agencies in emergency management.
Under limited direction, the Flood Authorizations Specialist, as a Deputy Inspector of Dikes appointed under the Dike Maintenance Act, is responsible for statutory duties regulating the construction, inspection and maintenance of dikes and other flood hazard mitigation works within the province. This position will develop, maintain and distribute provincial dike safety records and information, including mapping. The position will also work on coordinating and training flood assessment and observer personnel.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:
- Bachelor’s degree in a water-related discipline (Natural Resource Management, Integrated Watershed Management, Physical (fluvial) Geography, Water Resource or Civil Engineering) and a minimum of 3 years’ related experience; OR,
- Technical diploma in a related field and 5 years’ related experience, OR,
- Secondary school graduation, supplemented by related courses and 8 years’ related experience.
- Related experience includes hydrology, hydraulic structures, drainage, soil mechanics, construction/engineering practice, surveying, project supervision, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence, or equivalent.
Preference may be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in water-related management, including:
- Geotechnical and/or river engineering, embankment stability and seepage analysis, design and/or construction of earth embankments, dikes and small dams, drainage structures, erosion protection or related work, AND/OR,
- Hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, and flood mitigation techniques, AND/OR,
- Flood hazard management practices such as preparation of flood management plans or applications for structural project approvals, and/or review of flood management plans or applications for structural projects.
WILLINGNESS STATEMENTS
- Must be available 24/7 during response to emergencies and disasters and willing to perform a variety of duties within the scope of the position’s regular responsibilities.
- Must be willing and able to undertake emergency response work under stressful circumstances and in hostile climatic environments.
- Must be willing and able to occasionally travel throughout the region and conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
