Research Fellow in Hydrological Modeling and GIS

University of Southampton

Southampton, UK 🇬🇧

The School of Geography & Environmental Science is seeking a postdoctoral researcher/fellow in hydrological modeling and GIS for a one year position (with potential to extend depending on funding) with experience in the following areas: Hydrological Modelling, Hydrological Forecasting, Water Resources Management, Climate Change, GIS, Satellite Remote Sensing.

The successful candidate will contribute to research projects on hydroclimate variability under climate change, focused mainly (75%) on 1) A new European Space Agency (ESA) funded project, AFRI-SMART, to develop new approaches based on Earth Observation (EO) data, modelling and assimilation, for sustainable agriculture and water resources in Morocco; and (25%) on 2) ongoing GCRF and NERC funded work using EO data and GIS to assess impacts of sand-mining on bed-level changes and river bank erosion in the Mekong delta.

The post holder will work directly with Professor Justin Sheffield, to develop a hydrological monitoring and forecasting capacity nationally to understand the variability and predictability of water resources and hydrological extremes across scales in Morocco. They will collaborate with research partners to integrate this modelling framework with EO products and local-scale models of irrigation needs, working closely with stakeholders and end-users in Morocco.

In addition, the successful candidate will work with Dr. Julian Leyand to utilise their EO and spatial analysis skills to establish the impacts of sand mining on river in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The candidate will synthesise existing data to deliver hazard maps and contribute to a research paper and potential policy documents. There will likely be an opportunity to visit Vietnam to participate in a locally organised workshop.

You will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers to carry out research, write research papers, and disseminate research at national and international meetings. The post-holder will also have opportunities to develop knowledge and professional skill sets in: multi-disciplinary research projects; collaborative and partnership working; policy-influence; and international development issues.

The post is tenable from 1st January 2023 and there is potential to work remotely.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Justin Sheffield (Head of School; justin.sheffield@soton.ac.uk) or Doctor Julian Leyland (J.Leyland@soton.ac.uk)
