Présentation de la structure

The Institute of Environmental Geosciences (IGE) is a public research laboratory under the supervision of the CNRS, the IRD, the University Grenoble Alpes (UGA) and Grenoble-INP which works on climate change and anthropization of our planet in the polar, mountain and intertropical regions and the intertropical zone, regions that are particularly sensitive and have major societal stakes, major societal issues.

It brings together about 250 people, including more than 150 permanent members (researchers, researchers, engineers and technicians) and about 100 staff on fixed-term contracts (doctoral students, engineers and technicians), (PhD students, researchers and IT).

The laboratory also welcomes each year several dozens of trainees and scientific visitors. The laboratory is installed on two sites of the university campus of Grenoble (buildings Glaciology and OSUG-B – Maison Climat Planète).

The IGE is one of the main laboratories of the Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers de Grenoble (OSUG), a federative structure of the INSU.

Missions principales

You will work under the authority of Florent Gimbert, CNRS researcher at the IGE, in Alain Recking at INRAE and Kristen Cook at ISTerre. The team is composed of about ten agents. Your research will focus on a better understanding the seismic signature of extreme flood and debris flow events.

Activités principales

  • Laboratory and field experiments.
  • Interaction with scientists
  • Mechanical modeling.
  • Writing of scientific papers.

This PhD project aims at deciphering and describing the physics of extreme floods and their relationship with the seismic signal under a wide range of flood conditions, from moderately steep rivers to debris flows occurring on steeper slopes.

We will consider both field observations and laboratory experiments. Field observations will be conducted along French, Swiss, Himalayan and potentially Taiwanese rivers.

Laboratory experiments will be conducted in Grenoble using existing facilities, in which we will target specific physics using

in-situ force transducers, image correlation and potentially grain embedded accelerometer measurements.

Ultimately, we will gather our observational and experimental findings into a generalized seismo-mechanical theoretical framework capable of reproducing the main physical behaviors. These advances will establish seismology as a state-of-the-art monitoring tool to improve our knowledge of the physics of extreme floods worldwide.
