Global to Community Postdoctoral Research Associate on Climate Dynamics, Impacts, and Action

University of Virginia

Charlottesville, VA, USA 🇺🇸

The Environmental Resilience Institute at the University of Virginia (UVA) is launching a new Global-to-Community Climate Research Collaborative (G2C) Fellowship Program. The fellowship program seeks to recruit nine postdoctoral research associates over the next five years and will grow UVA’s expertise in the research areas of climate dynamics, impacts, and action. We seek leading scholars to advance the connection between climate modeling and community-level decision making. Creating this capability will require scholarship spanning disciplinary, spatial, and temporal boundaries.  We expect the Global-to-Community Fellowship will increase your competitiveness for faculty positions at UVA or elsewhere.

The climate dynamics project for which we are currently advertising involves regional hydroclimate changes.  In this project, the research associates will use global and regional climate models, to characterize future changes in hydroclimate in the southeastern United States. The associates will also work with other researchers who have expertise in local-scale hydrological models to support realistic and equitable policy and practice within

communities. The project will focus not only on changes in mean hydroclimate, but also changes in seasonality, variability, and extreme events and the implications for those changes at the community-scale level.

The associates will bridge the expertise between global-scale modelers, who focus on understanding the large-scale climate dynamics that contribute to uncertainty in future projections of the hydrological cycle, and local-scale modelers, who understand the local-scale factors necessary to incorporate into models to provide actionable information to community-scale decision makers.

Since climate change is expected to increasingly affect disadvantaged, often underrepresented communities, the G2C Fellowship Program is especially interested in including scholars with backgrounds that are underrepresented in climate change research. The program encourages applications from researchers across historically underrepresented groups. This includes race, ethnicity and national origins, gender and gender identity, sexuality, class, culture, and religion. We aim to build a truly diverse and inclusive cohort of researchers where diverse perspectives are recognized, respected, and seen as a source of strength.

The postdoctoral research associates will work as a cohort and will receive professional support and training, technical support, and computational infrastructure tailored to the program. Fellows will each work directly with two faculty members in different Schools to build cross-disciplinary fluency in support of their own research.

Research Areas:

There are several research areas G2C is focused on, this posting in particular falls under Climate Dynamics and specifically Regional Hydroclimatic Changes. We invite applicants to further explore the G2C Research Areas and proposed projects on our website.

About ERI:
ERI is the hub of interdisciplinary climate research at UVA. We provide seed funding and training to hundreds of faculty and students annually. With a focus on impactful research, ERI and its collaborators demonstrate our commitment to enhancing the diversity, equity, and inclusion in our work. We partner regularly with the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, UVA’s Career Center, and DEI staff across the university to provide career development and extracurricular opportunities to student and postdoctoral faculty.

The University of Virginia is rated as one of the top three public universities in the nation and in the top 30 among all universities, public and private. Charlottesville is frequently cited as one of the best cities in which to live and work. The University of Virginia is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. Women, minorities, veterans, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Must have received or will receive their Ph.D. by the beginning of this fellowship.

Preferred Requirements:

A background in atmospheric science and experience working with global and/or regional climate models are preferred. There is no citizenship requirement. Each G2C fellow will be appointed for one-year with possibility of extension (3-years maximum) contingent on successful annual performance reviews.

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Application Instructions:

Please apply through Workday and complete an application online; search for R0041260. Include the following documents:

  • CV/resume
  • Cover letter (describe your research interest in atmospheric science and how it aligns with this G2C Research theme)
  • Personal DEI statement

All documents can be loaded into the resume submission field, multiple documents can be submitted into this one field. Internal applicants must apply through their UVA Workday profile. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received, until positions are filled. For additional questions regarding the program, please contact Will Evans, G2C Project Manager (wpe2a@virginia.edu).

For additional questions regarding the advertised climate dynamics project on regional hydroclimate changes, please contact either Kevin Grise (kmg3r@virginia.edu) or Kathleen Schiro (kschiro@virginia.edu).

For questions about and assistance with the application process, please contact Jessica Speth, Academic Recruiter, at js9rk@virginia.edu.

Before a formal offer of employment is extended, the selected candidate will undergo a background check per university policy.
