Duties

  • Advise district and field offices regarding all aspects of aquatic and water resource data collection, including study design, protocol interpretation, training, and field logistics.
  • Perform and guide statistical procedures and data analysis to study and analyze the conditions and trends of the chemical, physical, and biological components of aquatic resources, including water quantity and quality.
  • Analyze aquatic resource monitoring and assessment data at multiple scales, considering the underlying sampling design and associated statistical assumptions.
  • Prepare final reports and recommendations related to studies of considerable breadth or diversity commensurate with the extensive scope and scale of aquatic resources in Alaska.
  • Coordinate with other state, federal, and regulatory agencies regarding program development, integration, and data analysis.

In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: independent responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine freshwater aquatic resource data collection and reporting at the watershed level; select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work; independently perform moderately difficult statistical analysis and collator.

Education: have three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree in biology, general engineering, physical science or other directly related field of study or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in biology, general engineering, physical science or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

For GS-12
In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: coordination of freshwater aquatic resource data collection and reporting at the District, State or Regional/Watershed level, designing and implementing aquatic resource surveys, performing data and geospatial analyses under the supervision of more senior scientists, using R or similar statistical analyses packages including custom scripts to run aquatic resource analyses, and preparing study reports based on survey findings.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary; however, you may occasionally be required to walk long distances over rough terrain carrying a backpack and/or equipment up to 10 pounds.

Work Environment: Your will occasionally be required to camp and/or live in remote and primitive conditions, to include sleeping in a tent and preparing your own food, while doing fieldwork for up to 2 days per month. You will occasionally also be required to drive long distances over rough gravel roads, operate all-terrain vehicles and snow machines, fly in various aircraft, and travel over water by raft, canoe, and riverboat. You will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or designated by the Safety Officer.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, range management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, or a combination of education and experience—courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
