Applied Research

We are looking for a transdisciplinary researcher integrating the natural, social, health and engineering sciences, to provide decision support tools to enable sustainable and equitable transitions in land and water management. This role is for the new Applied Research team that we are currently building.

This position will contribute to WELL Labs efforts’ to become a leader in water resources research for the world’s dryland regions and to address the strategic needs of the drylands in adapting to change and managing the combined risks of demographic, economic and climate change. 

The job involves

  1. Generating cutting edge “challenge based research” outputs
  2. Informing and being informed by work being conducted by our Urban Water and Rural Futures teams in our “transformation labs”
  3. Being the Principal Investigator (PI) for existing and new large international collaborations
  4. Growing a research and innovation team and becoming a thought leader

Preferred qualifications

  1. A proven track record of research in any of the following areas:
    – Hydro-economic valuation, modeling and analysis
    – Integrated land and water resource systems models for decision making under uncertainty
    – Socio-hydrologic modeling of future pathways
  2. Strong quantitative skills and demonstrable experience of interdisciplinary research
  3. Motivated by having an impact vs. generating research for research sake
  4. A passion for working with poor and marginalised communities
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills, because of the collaborative nature of the work
  6. Experience with transdisciplinary projects as demonstrated through community engagement, interdisciplinary publications and policy outreach

Preferred background

A Ph.D. degree in water resources research, hydro-economics, socio-hydrology, water systems analysis, or a related discipline with rigorous quantitative training and knowledge of environmental policy and governance 

What we offer

We offer a flexible and remote working environment, with quarterly meetings where the team meets together. We focus less on hours worked and more on the outputs produced and the quality of those outputs. We are an interdisciplinary team, and we work on problems with direct implications for on-ground impact.

The position will report to the Executive Director, Well Labs. Candidates with a proven publication track record may become a visiting faculty at Krea University and co-supervise Ph.D. students.

Location: We are open to remote working, with travel as required.

Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with experience.
