OVERVIEW
Do you have a talent for research and a passion for engaging people on environmental issues?
Earthwatch is recruiting for a Science Coordinator. The post holder will support the virtual and on-the-ground delivery of Earthwatch’s flagship citizen science project FreshWater Watch. They will also support the FreshWater Watch Team on engagement, technical and administrative aspects of ongoing research projects, including data analysis, citizen science training and management of field equipment. Work will be based locally in the Oxfordshire area, as well as remote support and training to our global community groups.
The FreshWater Watch programme uses citizen science to engage public and corporate audiences, bringing people together to create knowledge and to conserve and restore ecosystems. The ideal candidate will bring a good understanding of freshwater science and citizen science with proven experience in stakeholder engagement, data analysis, and report writing. They will be a proactive self-starter with excellent organisational and relationship management skills. RESPONSIBILITIES
Role Purpose:
To provide scientific and administrative support to run and expand Earthwatch’s impactful water programme.
Key Deliverables
- Provide in-person and online scientific and logistic support for training events, public engagement events as part of the FreshWater Watch programme, in the Oxford area.
- Support volunteer management including responding to technical and practical enquiries, maintaining regular communications, and building rapport.
- Train participants to take part in citizen science activities with support from the research lead, this may include face-to-face training and online training anywhere in the world.
- Provide logistic support to (international) research partners during project set-up, delivery and dissemination.
- Conduct data processing, data analysis, and monitoring and evaluation for a range of projects, and contribute to reports and publications.
- Work with the Research Lead to contribute to innovative and impactful freshwater research.
- Coordinate field and sensor measurements in the Evenlode catchment as part of the Evenlode Catchment Partnership project.
- Support maintenance and development of FreshWater Watch application and Esri platform.
- Support research development, delivery, fundraising, partnership working and knowledge dissemination by pro-actively organising meetings, coordinating communications, taking minutes and contributing to discussions, research proposals and documentation.
- Develop, update and format communications and learning materials using standard templates.
- Provide support to the wider organisation as required.

REQUIREMENTS
Essential
- A good understanding of applied environmental science including freshwater ecosystems, citizen science, sensor data, demonstrated through a degree in a relevant field and/or relevant work experience
- Friendly, outgoing manner and interest in engaging volunteers and science communication
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Excellent planning and organisation skills
- Proven fieldwork, data analysis, statistics and report writing skills and a good understanding of monitoring and evaluation principles
- Written and spoken fluency in English.
- A personal passion for freshwater issues, the environment and public engagement.
- A pro-active self-starter who works on their own initiative: able to resolve issues and provide solutions and judge where issues need referring.
- Ability to travel to the office and study sites across Oxfordshire and the UK as required
- IT skills, experience with Microsoft office, including Word, Powerpoint and Excel
- Proven ability to deliver to agreed deadlines.
- Experience of working in a team.
- Commitment to the mission and values of Earthwatch.
Desirable
- Skills in open-source data analysis softwares (e.g. RStudio) and GIS (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Experience in the delivery of citizen science projects
