Job Summary:

The Environment and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all activities related to environmental sustainability and WASH programs within the organization. This role involves developing and implementing strategies, policies, and initiatives to promote environmental conservation, water management, sanitation, and hygiene practices. The Environment and WASH Coordinator works closely with internal teams, external stakeholders, and local communities to ensure effective implementation of programs and compliance with regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Environmental Sustainability:

Develop and implement environmental sustainability strategies, policies, and programs.

Monitor and assess environmental impacts of the organization’s operations and projects.

Identify opportunities for resource conservation, waste management, and renewable energy utilization.

Coordinate environmental assessments and audits, ensuring compliance with local regulations and standards.

Advise on best practices for environmental management and sustainability initiatives.

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH):

Plan, implement, and monitor WASH programs in line with organizational objectives and donor requirements.

Assess community needs and develop appropriate WASH interventions and initiatives.

Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure the availability of clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education.

Monitor WASH program activities, budgets, and progress, and prepare regular reports.

Conduct training sessions on WASH practices for staff, partners, and local communities.

Project Coordination and Management:

Coordinate the planning, implementation, and evaluation of environmental and WASH projects.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure effective project delivery and resource allocation.

Monitor project timelines, budgets, and deliverables, and address any issues or risks.

Conduct field visits and provide technical support to project sites as needed.

Foster collaboration and partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders.

Capacity Building and Advocacy:

Identify capacity building needs related to environmental sustainability and WASH.

Develop and deliver training programs to enhance knowledge and skills of staff and partners.

Advocate for environmental protection and sustainable WASH practices at local, regional, and national levels.

Represent the organization in relevant forums, conferences, and working groups.

Support the development and dissemination of informational materials and campaigns.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:

Establish monitoring and evaluation frameworks for environmental and WASH programs.

Conduct regular assessments and evaluations to measure program effectiveness and impact.

Prepare accurate and timely reports on program activities, outcomes, and financial expenditures.

Ensure compliance with donor reporting requirements and maintain proper documentation.

Qualifications and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Water Resources Management, Public Health, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.

Proven experience in managing environmental sustainability and WASH programs, preferably in an NGO or humanitarian organization.

In-depth knowledge of environmental conservation principles, water and sanitation technologies, and hygiene promotion approaches.

Familiarity with relevant international standards and guidelines, such as SDGs, WASH in Healthcare Facilities, and environmental impact assessment frameworks.

Strong project management skills, including planning, budgeting, monitoring, and evaluation.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Ability to facilitate training sessions and deliver technical assistance to staff and partners.

Proficient in data analysis, report writing, and presentation skills.

Knowledge of local languages and cultural sensitivity is an asset.

Flexibility to travel to project sites and work in challenging environments.

The Environment and WASH Coordinator plays a critical role in promoting sustainable environmental practices and improving access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. This position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to drive positive change.
