How This Position Contributes to The Team

Serves as practice leader for circular water economy. Leads development of initiatives, products, and services in water resources recovery and the circular water economy.

NOTE: This position is currently 80% remote work, 20% work in office as of April 2022.

Principal Functions: 

  • Works with and leads relevant volunteer groups to develop initiatives and services to support WEF’s Critical Objectives, particularly in municipal water resource recovery, water reuse, water/energy nexus, industrial wastewater, and emerging technical topics like PFAS
  • Provides leadership and technical support for grants and contracts requiring engineering expertise
  • Manages projects for multiple types of WEF outputs including technical reports, fact sheets, and WEFTEC programs such as the Innovation Pavilion
  • Participates in the growth of external funding by developing external relationships, identifying partnering and funding opportunities, developing proposals, and managing related projects 
  • Manages the WEF Municipal Water Resource Recovery Design Committee, Water Reuse Committee, Industrial Wastewater Committee, Innovation Initiative, and various Research and Innovation (RISE) Task Forces
  • Coordinates volunteer activity with WEF’s Education & Training delivery mechanisms, Communications group, Publications group, Marketing, Social Media, and other groups as applicable
  • Supports the Director of the Water Science and Engineering Center on specific WEF initiatives on the Circular Water Economy and Innovation Initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • B.S. in Environmental or Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or related degree area (M.S. or P.E. preferred)
  • 5 to 8 years environmental engineering/science experience focused in design, operation, and/or management of water infrastructure systems
  • Work experience at or with a water/wastewater utility and familiarity with sustainability and innovation concepts desirable
  • High degree of initiative and interest in business and service development
  • Ability to lead staff and staff/volunteer teams
  • Able to manage multiple projects and deadlines with minimum direction and to lead projects from initial concept to delivery
  • Grasp of engineering, scientific, and mathematical principles underlying technology of municipal water systems 
  • Understanding of current technical, policy, and management issues facing municipal and consulting professionals
  • Professional Engineer or other relevant designation desirable
  • Articulate with excellent written communication skills & ability to serve as WEF representative
  • Detail oriented and accurate with excellent project management skills
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the year

This person will work primarily in an office environment using standard office equipment.
