Description

TU is seeking to hire a self-motivated and highly capable person to identify, prioritize, plan, and implement habitat restoration and irrigation efficiency projects. Duties will include work with watershed stakeholders, agency partners, and landowners to improve the resilience of native fisheries and habitat in Utah’s Uintah Basin by improving habitat, water quality, and fish passage. A successful candidate will work with a team of watershed stakeholders to prioritize, design, and implement a wide range of restoration activities across the basin with the intent to deliver broad benefits to fisheries, agricultural producers, and communities surrounding the river. Typical projects include construction of beaver dam analogs (BDAs), reconstruction of irrigation diversions to allow for fish passage, fish passage on forest service land, and floodplain restoration, and cutthroat population restoration. Additionally, there will be opportunities to work on instream flow leasing projects for the restoration of flow in the river. A successful candidate will also have the freedom to be creative with projects.  This position is highly visible to TU members and stakeholders in the watershed. The position is flexibly based in communities with proximity to Vernal, UT.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with agency staff, landowners, and other watershed stakeholders to implement watershed restoration efforts throughout the basin. 
  • Manage complex budgets with multiple funding sources.
  • Contract with engineering consultants and contractors to design and construct habitat restoration and fish passage projects.
  • Write grant proposals to state and federal agencies and private foundations.
  • Represent Trout Unlimited staff on several local committees.
  • Manage and maintain existing on-the-ground infrastructure such as fish screens and beaver dam analogs.
  • Collect water quality and flow data. 
  • Attend Trout Unlimited chapter and council functions where appropriate.
  • Write grants and obtain project funding. 

Requirements

  • Preference will be given to a candidate with a master’s degree in Fisheries, Environmental Science or related field, and 4 years of relevant experience in watershed restoration, fisheries biology, environmental policy, or similar field. Bachelor’s degree level candidates in the previously listed or related fields are accepted.
  • Professional experience working with landowners, resource managers, and other interested parties in a collaborative setting.
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to problem solve and think creatively to achieve a conservation mission.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and highly energetic with excellent time-management skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel locally.
  • Must be able to lift fifty pounds and hike over uneven terrain.
  • Work occurs in office and outdoor environments and can require work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
