WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Land and Water Conservation Director is directly responsible for leadership, management and accountability of the Chapter’s Conserve Land and Water Initiative which include strategies such as private land and water protection, salmon recovery, and improved management of Idaho’s forests and sagebrush ecosystems. They directly supervise staff and lead teams associated with private and public land conservation, restoration, and stewardship. They provide strategic leadership for the Idaho Chapter, while creating a positive, collaborative, and results-driven culture. They negotiate complex and innovative solutions with diverse partners, including complex real estate transactions, large scale restoration projects and multi-party collaboratives. They establish the Conservancy as a major conservation partner in Idaho with local communities, tribes, government agencies, other NGOs, donors, and supporters. They negotiate complex and innovative transactions and solutions with government agencies, tribes, and landowners to ensure strong, equitable, and lasting significant contributions to the Conservancy’s 2030 goals.

For over 50 years, The Nature Conservancy has demonstrated that we can play a unique and critical role in shaping and implementing large-scale solutions to conserve the lands and water of Idaho. We have established ourselves as valued and credible partners and are looking to build on this work in a rapidly changing ecological, social, political, and climatic context. The Land and Water Conservation Director is responsible for developing and sustaining an inspiring and compelling vision of success for the Conservancy’s land and water conservation programs in Idaho. They act as a spokesperson for the Conservancy’s work in Idaho engaging and presenting to key audiences including trustees, donors, media, and partners. They work closely with the Development team to raise capital and operating funds from public and private sources. They build, direct, and provide support to a team of dedicated team members and collaborates with Conservancy colleagues across the Western U.S. and North America to achieve success. It is expected that this approach will lead new ways of working with tribes, partners, and colleagues across the West to ensure strong and lasting significant contributions to the Conservancy’s 2030 goals.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • BA/BS degree in natural resources management, conservation, business, law or another related field of study and at least 5 years’ experience in land conservation, real estate, law, business or related field.
  • Experience working with a wide range of people, such as landowners, tribes, donors and government officials.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience in developing and managing multiple projects and timelines.
  • Experience working with computers, including database management.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Knowledge of current trends and strategies in land and water conservation.
  • Experience directing a major program and coordinating complex projects in a decentralized organization, working across teams, operating units and functions to achieve optimal results. 
  • Management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, and manage performance of a large multi-disciplinary team. 
  • Consistently demonstrate professional, positive, self-aware, and approachable attitude.
