Are you a hydrologist keen to work in a research team environment with the Aquatic Research and Monitoring Section? What can I expect to do in this role?

• process and conduct statistical analyses on streamflow time-series and gridded hydro-climatological data
• synthesise large data sets, prepare data visualisations, and contribute to scientific reports and web-based delivery of hydrological information
• conduct spatial analyses using geographical information systems and remotely sensed imagery
• participate in the planning, preparation, and delivery of research projects
• assist in fieldwork to install, service, and maintain specialized equipment to monitor hydrologic and climatologic processes

How do I qualify?

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• You possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
• You are able to travel to remote locations for multiple days.
• You have the physical ability to handle heavy equipment and work under adverse weather conditions.
• You must have a valid class ‘G’ driver’s licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver’s licence upon being hired.

Specific knowledge:
• You have working knowledge of scientific hydrologic principles, concepts and statistical practices and their application to water management.
• You have knowledge of streamflow generating processes and can interpret streamflow time-series based on those processes.
• You have demonstrated proficiency working with Climate Change Canada’s National Water Data Archive (HYDAT) and gridded hydro-climatological data products or similar.
• You have knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

Technical expertise:
• You have demonstrated knowledge of hydrological field sampling and monitoring.
• You have a demonstrated ability to operate specialized sampling equipment to ensure data quality and continuity.

Analytical skills:
• You have demonstrated analytical skills using common statistical methods in hydrology to conduct streamflow analyses and to process and synthesise gridded hydro-climatological data using common programming languages (e.g. Matlab, R, Python).
• You have demonstrated computational skills, including a high level of proficiency with R or Python programming languages.
• You have demonstrated proficiency developing and implementing static and interactive data visualisations of hydrological data.

Interpersonal and communications skills:
• You possess proven interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate scientific information clearly and concisely with staff, the public, outside agencies, and research collaborators with tact and good judgment.
• You can effectively prepare written material for publication as presentations, technical reports and scientific literature.

Organizational skills:
• You possess strong organizational skills to manage large volumes of data, execute complex analyses in a timely manner, and communicate results to diverse groups.
• You have a team-oriented focus but have the ability to work independently.

Computer skills:
• You have demonstrated computer skills with statistical, geographic information systems, computer programming (e.g. R, JavaScript, Python, Matlab), word processing, spreadsheet, database development, and presentation software to manage complex datasets and information.

Eligibility:

• Proof of eligibility to work in Canada;
• Is not a permanent OPS employee;
• Has graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a diploma or an equivalent degree or postgraduate certificate within the last four years;
• Candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNRF 12-month placement and must not have participated in the MNRF internship program in the past.
