Job description

Water is vital for all life. This role provides the opportunity to make a difference through a rewarding career dedicated to managing this precious resource in the environment while balancing the increasing pressures from climate change and rising water demand for people, businesses, industry and agriculture.
Devon, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly (DCIS) Area still remains in drought status since Summer 2022. Although autumn rainfall increased the low river flows experienced during the summer, drought continues due to the need to refill public water supply reservoirs for spring / summer 2023.
To help us ensure the future resilience of water for the environment, we are recruiting two new permanent posts, at an officer and specialist level. Both will be part of our DCIS Area Integrated Environment Planning (IEP) Team, and form part of our overall ‘Team Water Resources (WR)’. To help us adapt our workforce to critical environmental priorities, you may also have the opportunity to undertake an incident management role, and support our water and environment management work in other teams.
For this Officer role we are looking for someone who understands the importance of water, with keenness to manage this resource for the environment through supporting a range of activities including:
• Plan, develop and prioritise our WR investigations and monitoring.
• Update and maintain our abstraction licence records to ensure a quality evidence base for environmental planning.
• Update our Abstraction Licensing Strategies to provide information about future water availability.
• Respond to consultations for applications for new and varied abstraction licences to ensure future sustainability.
• Support water company engagement on drought and water resources management plans, licensing and future Price Review investment.
You will need to be a team player, and keen to contribute to our culture for close team working.

The team

We are an inclusive team with a passion to protect and enhance the environment. We work with others to focus on the most important things for the environment. You will also have opportunity to support our incident management, the wider national EA community, and work with our external partners who share the ambition of our Environment Plan for a nation resilient to climate change; healthy air, land and water; and green growth and future sustainability.

Experience/skills required

  • A keenness to develop your understanding of WR management for the environment, and support our role to ensure a water resilient future
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others to deliver environmental outcomes
  • Confidence to manage competing workloads and deliver tasks to deadlines
  • Able to work effectively in a dispersed team.
  • Excellent skills with MS Excel and mapping programmes
