Position Summary

The Institute of Water Research at MSU is seeking a full-time programmer and GIS specialist that can assist with front-end development (java script development, HTML, CSS, and Python) scripting. The candidate will provide project-specific support via GIS analysis, web development, processing GIS data (e.g., downloading and processing SSURGO, DEMs), and digitizing. SQL database programming and VB.net programming is preferred but not required. 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.

Desired Qualifications

  • M.S. degree from a four-year college degree program in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Natural Resources Management, Biology, Environmental Studies, and related field and 5 years of relevant experience in a professional setting.
  • SQL database programming and VB.net programming
  • Familiarity with hydrography datasets including National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) products and the Water Boundary Dataset (WBD).
  • Experience managing and working with large geospatial datasets and databases.
  • Knowledge of aquatic ecosystems, biology, and research.
