Job description

Can you help design, develop and implement three new groundwater projects?

The Chemicals Investigation Programme 4 (CIP4) is a national water industry funded initiative to investigate trace substances and plastic particles in the water environment. You’ll support and coordinate our input into these projects:
• Groundwater chemicals monitoring of treated sewage effluent discharges;
• £2m field and laboratory investigation into the impacts of sewage sludge spreading on groundwater; and
• An investigation into the fate and behaviour of plastic particles in a treated sewage effluent discharged to ground.

Your contributions will be:
• writing technical specifications and helping manage all three projects
• finding field study sites
• analysing groundwater datasets, which will include letting research contracts
• tracking project progress, flagging risks as necessary
• ensuring that project outputs and datasets are freely available to the public
• contributing to development of a long-term vision and regulatory solutions for managing chemical inputs to groundwater.

You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.

You’ll have an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan, so we’ll support you to find an incident role to suit your needs and circumstances.

The team

You’ll join our (Water and Land Quality) Groundwater Team. We lead on groundwater permitting and compliance issues. We advise Government to ensure that the regulation of groundwater resources and quality sustainably balances the needs of the environment with those of businesses and society.

We’re based in the Environment and Business Directorate which supports the Environment Agency by using evidence, expertise and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy, legislation and secure resources.

Experience/skills required

You’ll need the technical skills to:
• be an experienced groundwater specialist, with a good understanding of groundwater chemistry
• have experience in groundwater research and fieldwork
• be able to conceptualise groundwater environments in three-dimensions.

You’ll also demonstrate your:
• ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work
• excellent analytical and data skills
• influencing and communication skills
• interpersonal and team-working skills
• proactive, self-motivated attitude that delivers quality outcomes

Experience of the water company price review process is desirable.

Ideally, you’ll be Chartered with an appropriate professional body, though this is not essential.
