Do you want to join an expanding team of visionary thinkers driving the frontiers of sustainability, at a University that is making major investments in sustainability?

The Centre for Environment and Sustainability (CES), part of the new School of Sustainability and Civil and Environmental Engineering (SCEE) at the University of Surrey, is seeking to recruit a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer who will apply systems approaches to the challenge of achieving just transitions towards sustainability, and who is committed to innovative and high quality learning.

CES is an internationally acclaimed interdisciplinary centre of excellence on sustainable development, which enjoys an outstanding reputation for the quality of its research, teaching and strong links with industry.  CES underpins the formation of the University of Surrey’s new pan-university Institute for Sustainability, demonstrating the University’s commitment to interdisciplinary sustainability research and teaching.

The University is launching a new BSc in Environment and Sustainability in September 2023. This BSc is an innovative inter-disciplinary degree with core modules taught by CES staff and elective modules drawn from across the wider university. The appointee will take a leading role in delivering the new programme and will help to shape its teaching, including developing new, innovative teaching materials and approaches, and welcoming its first cohort of students.

This post is available either as a teaching-track Lecturer/Senior Lecturer or as a research & teaching Lecturer/Senior Lecturer. The appointee will become the leader for the new BSc programme and will teach a number of its core modules. Applicants for this post need to have significant teaching experience and ideally programme management experience also, and a passion for innovation in teaching and learning in the field of environment and sustainability. Any research / teaching focus complimentary to CES’ existing strengths in environment and sustainability will be considered.

The appointee for the research & teaching track for this post will have a proven track record of publishing world-class research and a strong commitment to teaching. They will complement CES’s existing expertise in systems analysis and build on CES’s multi-disciplinary approach which gives due prominence to social sciences as well as technology, and multi-sectoral approaches and sectoral crossovers, such as the energy-water-food nexus.

The appointee will benefit from priority access to PhD studentships and other support for early career academics through the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences and the University’s Doctoral College.

Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be held in the week of 6th February 2023. For informal enquiries, please contact Professor Richard Murphy, Director of the Centre for Environment & Sustainability rj.murphy@surrey.ac.uk

Applicants should submit a CV and a two page application on how they would contribute to research, innovation and teaching at Surrey.  The CV and application should address the selection criteria.
