Role

In this position, you will be responsible for supporting four core results related to watershed monitoring and research delivered by the Watershed Sciences Section of the Air and Watershed Stewardship Branch, within the Resource Stewardship Division: Design, Planning, Delivering, Evaluation and Reporting. These responsibilities include: 

  • Design: You will provide key technical and analytical support in the development of focused and core monitoring programs. This includes literature reviews and data retrieval, preparation and analyses to directly support the development and delivery of work plans related to EPA’s water science programs. 
  • Planning: You will explore and identify innovative methods to observe and measure the condition of watersheds by staying up to date with the latest science, as well as frequent interaction with provincial and national scientists.
  • Delivering: You will support the implementation of the watershed monitoring programs, including but not limited to supporting the development of standardized operating procedures for monitoring activities. You will also assist your team in the compilation of data in response to internal and external information requests, including but not limited to requests for water quality/quantity data or reports on the condition of Alberta’s watersheds. 
  • Evaluation and Reporting: You will assist in the compilation of data from EPA and external databases in preparation for subsequent analyses and conduct basic and advanced statistical analyses of water quality and quantity data to deliver specific project requirements using analytical platforms such as R or Python. You will also lead (under the supervision of the principal investigator) and/or participate in the collaborative writing of reporting products communicating major observations and conclusions of long-term and focused monitoring activities on the condition, status and trends of the quality and health of Alberta’s watersheds, including but not limited to peer reviewed scientific papers, technical and state of the environment reports.

Qualifications

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor of Science in a field related to Watershed science (e.g. aquatic biology, aquatic chemistry, aquatic ecology, hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental statistics, biogeochemistry, and water resources); no experience is required.

Assets: 

  • Strong data analysis skills and demonstrated competency in existing and emerging statistical methods related to assessing the status and changes in environmental conditions.
  • Demonstrated competency using analytical platforms such as R or Python.
  • Experience working with large water quality and quantity datasets for Alberta’s river, lake and/or groundwater systems.
  • Strong scientific writing skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences (e.g. stakeholders, the public, senior government leadership).
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s acts, regulations and policies and frameworks related to water quality and quantity.
  • Field experience in the collection of water monitoring samples/data.

Salary

$2,646.59 to $3,471.47 bi-weekly ($69,075 – $90,605/year)

Hours of Work: 36.25 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday.
