Your role

The Agribusiness, Food and Water department (“AFW”) is looking for an Investment Officer in the Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Middle East and North Africa (“ECA MENA”) team. In this role you will be responsible for: 

  • Execution of debt investments that fit in the AFW strategy: contributes to business development/origination activities, drafts key account plans and/or country strategies. Structures and executes transactions, in collaboration with ESOs and other specialists as needed, under the direction of the Manager AFW ECA MENA.
  • Portfolio Management (Reviews): has overall responsibility for quality and timelines of all internal documents related to the designated portfolio (e.g., reviews, change and waiver requests, disbursements, and IRC memos).
  • Builds strong relationships with AFW clients and prospects by understanding their business, the market and environment they operate in and the risks and challenges they face through regular visits and/or calls.
  • Takes the lead, or participates with SIO, in negotiation/contracting process of debt investments together with the legal team.
  • Coaches Associates and Portfolio Analysts as required. Provides context on work delegated to/performed by Portfolio Analysts/Associates.
  • Ensuring Investment Risk Policies and Regulations, including KYC process, are assessed with quality of work Associates/ Portfolio Analysts.
  • Ensures clarity on role/task division. Provides input and feedback to Associates and Portfolio Analysts on credit reviews, change requests, disbursement memos and on their part of the investment proposals (CIP/FP).
  • Provides input to the team business plan.
  • Participates in organisation-wide projects.

Your team

The agricultural sector is one of the 3 focus sectors in FMO because it has such a substantial impact in the countries where we are active.  We invest in private sector companies to stimulate a more sustainable food system that reduces hunger (SDG2 – zero hunger), that increases development of rural areas in particular (smallholder) suppliers (SDG10 – reduce inequalities) and stimulates environmentally friendly technologies and practices (SDG13 – climate action).

The team focuses on origination, execution and management of debt investments and clients in the agribusiness sector in the region. AFW works with companies along the food system including primary producers, processors, traders and logistical services providers and wants to grow its client- and portfolio base. The team is very diverse (6 different nationalities in a total team of 8), high performing and a lot of fun!

Your background

  • Master’s degree – preferably finance, economics, business administration or engineering.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience in development or corporate banking.
  • Experience working in Middle East and/or North Africa is preferred.
  • Familiarity with debt financing in emerging markets, preferably in the AFW sector and/or ECA MENA region.
