ShoreRivers seeks an Education Coordinator to support our efforts to achieve healthy waterways across Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The Coordinator will provide classroom instruction, conduct student field experiences, and lead teacher professional development workshops for multiple school districts. The ideal candidate for this position is a high-energy team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills and experience with children and school systems. This position offers a competitive benefits package and a salary range between $40,000 and $55,000 based on experience. Position begins as soon as possible.

The Education Coordinator is part of the Education Department and reports to the Director of Education, working in person out of the Easton or Chestertown office with a flexible schedule. This position is open to entry or mid-level candidates. This is a full-time position; the employee must be available to work within school day hours and occasionally weekends, evenings, and longer hours when necessary. This position requires frequent travel between Eastern Shore schools and field trip sites. The employee must live in, or be willing to relocate to, the communities where we work. The employee must be vaccinated against Covid-19 and provide a copy of their vaccination card.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate within the Education Department and with partner teachers to develop curriculum that aligns with Next Generation Science Standards, Maryland Environmental Literacy Standards, and the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience framework. 
  • Lead K-12 programming including field trips and school ground lessons for approximately 2,000 students annually.  
  • Collaborate within the Education Department to develop and deliver teacher professional development workshops focused on local watershed science including land-use and water quality issues, solutions, and outdoor and environmental education pedagogy.
  • Assist in executing student stewardship action projects that may include native plantings, trash clean-ups, awareness campaigns, and more.
  • Support Education Department initiatives to elevate youth voice and environmental action in ShoreRivers’ programs. Includes collaboratively planning the Upper Shore Youth Environmental Action Summit.
  • Contribute content to ShoreRivers’ outreach materials including newsletters, press releases, and social media.
  • Collaborate with other ShoreRivers staff to incorporate youth engagement across all programs. Examples include advocacy, community tree plantings and clean-ups, social media campaigns, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Maintain environmental education supplies including water quality probes, waders, canoes and seine nets.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The employee must have a strong commitment to environmental protection and to ShoreRivers’ mission.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience in the areas of education, science, environmental, or multidisciplinary studies.
  • Minimum of three years’ professional experience in a combination of the following: classroom teacher or nonformal educator, community outreach, or youth programming.
  • An understanding of environmental issues that affect water quality.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Capable of interpreting and describing scientific information and data to a range of different audiences through a variety of different media.
  • Have strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple different school schedules simultaneously.
  • Be familiar with watershed science and concepts and equipment calibration.
  • Must be committed to advancing Diversity, Equity, Justice, and Inclusion (DEIJ) in the environmental and education fields. Must be committed to learning and implementing DEIJ best practices in environmental education.
  • Must be a team-player who is confident in sharing creative ideas and networking with volunteers, board members, teachers, and donors.
  • Must be confident in kayaks and canoes.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs., launch students in canoes, walk two miles, and do it again the next day.
  • Proficient with Google suites, MS Office including Excel and PowerPoint, and confident in facilitating online platforms such as Zoom, Google Meets, and Microsoft Teams.
