Local recruitment: Community Conservation Manager

Walloon Lake Association (WLA)

Walloon Lake, MI, USA 🇺🇸

The mission of the Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy (WLAC) is to conserve, care for and enhance the connection of people to Walloon Lake and its watershed, now and forever. The WLAC is an oddity in the conservation community in that it is a hybrid of a lake association and land trust. We view our uniqueness as a strength. We are a non-profit (501C3), membership-based organization. We have a board of 14 Trustees, 6 full-time teammates with the addition of 1-3 interns every year.  Through 9 Committees we are able to tackle lake and land issues; from boater safety, government relations, aquatic invasive species control to land conservation, preserve stewardship and public education. The right person will see this extra-ordinary combination as a unique opportunity to protect the lake and land in one of the most beloved scenic areas in the country.

We: conserve and protect the “Gem of the North,” aka Walloon Lake and its watershed following best practices and standards. We are a small but mighty team that helps form lifelong connections between this amazing little piece of the world and the people who live, work and play in Walloon. Our board members and volunteers are the best humans on the planet. And our stakeholders like to bake us cookies.

You: are an energetic natural resources expert looking for a different challenge in the conservation field. You get excited by the prospect of leading outreach strategies and volunteer engagement opportunities that support land and water protection programs. You understand and can navigate the dynamics of local governments, small towns, resort communities and the range of demographics in between.

The Role:

As a result of the most recent effort in strategic planning and long-range visioning, the WLAC is positioned to elevate and accelerate our conservation efforts through community engagement. With a deep understanding that Everyone with a capital E, is needed to ensure special places like Walloon Lake remain protected forever, the WLAC is investing resources to engage the broader Northern Michigan community in our mission.

The Community Conservation Manager will lead the WLAC’s conservation outreach programs.

Key opportunities of the role include:

  • Help to shape the overall strategic direction of the community engagement programs
  • Create appropriate systems to recruit, track, retain and upgrade volunteers and other program participants
  • Implement and assess community engagement initiatives that help folks better understand the important work of conservation in our community
  • Plan, implement and adapt programs that engage and inspire

Some perks…

  • Starting salary is $47,000/year and keeps pace with the latest Land Trust Alliance’s Salary Survey
  • Family Health Insurance Plan or Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA Plan)
  • 6% Annual Simple Employee Plan (SEP) Contribution
  • Plethora of vacation and personal days
  • Cell Phone/Internet Stipend
  • Flexibility — work from home arrangements combined with in-office hours
  • Modern office space located in the heart of Walloon Lake Village  (Oh! And we have some really great office chairs with up/down desk thingamabobs)
  • Paid professional development
  • Office snacks
  • Did we mention that we get to wake up every morning and protect the most beautiful lake in the world??
